I find it a bit odd that the tree in Belgium appears to have already lost most of its leaves while those in my garden in Aberdeenshire are still in full leaf, only showing signs of turning in the past week.  Different varieties perhaps?
Mine have yielded better this year than in any of the previous thirty or so that they have been growing, and the nuts themselves are also fuller and better filled than ever.  Maybe climate change or maybe just maturity.

My mature Horsechestnut tree’s defoliated in late August due to the drought conditions in France, the Walnuts held on till the end of September, Belgium has experienced a similar prolonged heatwave.

In fact the walnut tree seems to have lost its leaves before any of the other trees (see attached). It's true we did have a v dry and sunny July and August but then a wet fortnight in September saved most of our frazzled flora.

I'm wondering now if I could do anything with all the rotting walnut fruit? Walnut liqueur seems to need unripe nuts if the internet is to be believed but I'd love to hear if anyone's used ripe fruit...
