Well we finally got to the bottom of this, it was the ‘crankshaft pulley damper’ that had failed ! I’ve had a few of these now on older Isuzu 4LE1 engines and they can be hard to diagnose, the usual giveaway being that the revs on the display fluctuate but the actual engine revs are constant.. much more difficult to find on an older chipper that may not have the revs displayed but ‘No-Stress’ lights instead..

Another symptom of this failure is engine overheating.!

With a failed damper , if you try to turn the engine over on the cooling fan the crankshaft pulley outer section will actually freewheel on the innermost section of the pulley.

And a new pulley is not cheap....
