Dissertation Research: How Are Arboricultural Arising's Being Processed?

Dear Fellow Arborist,

I am currently undertaking a BSc in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry at Myerscough College, part of the University of Central Lancashire. As part of this I am looking into the question “How Are Arboricultural Arising's Being Processed?” I am particularly interested in the potential for further development of the tree hub/ tree station provision. A tree hub/ tree station is a place where locally sourced arisings from arboriculture work can be brought to be processed to prevent them becoming waste. The arisings are then recycled and reused in an environmentally efficient manner that makes money for the cooperative.

I would be very grateful if you could, complete the short questionnaire detailed below to help me with this. Information provided will be treated with strict confidence and individuals and firms will not be identified. The questionnaire should only take several minutes of your time.

Kind Regards

John McGowan

john - I don't know if you can amend the questionnaire easily, but a couple of suggestions...

q2,q6,q7 - add a don't know/depends option

q3 - volume or mass: huge difference if, like me, you don't usually chip.

edit: to clarify - I take most of my green bits to the local skip hire place. they segregate green waste but no idea what they actually do with it, tbh. I pay them to take it off my hands. I don't know if this is a "tree hub" - I suspect not, as not a co-op.

also, might be useful for your research to gather location data alongside the other info.

Hi

Thank you for both for your responses.

One Truth sorry for the delay in responding I've been in hospital. The point you've raised about the location is valid and I wish I had put it in the questionnaire,  however this point has been asked to some tree hub/ tree stations in a second questionnaire about funding for there specific enterprises and it appears a few of them have trouble getting grants due to the location where they are. For example urban enterprises find it easier to gain funding as apposed to rural ones which struggle, this point will be raised within the dissertation.

I'm looking closely into the co-operative/ social enterprises which reinvest profits from sold wood as apposed to say a limited company. The co-operatives will accept the waste for free as apposed to paying for the waste to be removed.

Volume of mass: from the responses I've had measurements have all been different.

I'm going to re advertise the survey today on the forums and the facebook group. I will keep you posted on the findings from the research.

OT but ...What gets me is there is a composting place in west malling that the council use for their green waste recycling that's threatened with closure cos they cant get enuf to make it viable. I and local tree surgeons could give them more than they could cope with ... but not allowed to take it there ..... ??????
