I have just had a small insert wood burner put in, have got seasoned wood, after bringing in wood in basket several bugs about as big as a fly ,harder body, stink when crushed , also had these yrs ago when burning wood on open fire , what are they?

Brush off wood before bringing into house, gets rid of most beasties.

I suspect wood/bark boring beetles. Before brushing, check for loose bark and peel away. If the blighters are evident, knock the piece on a wall or step, that'll get rid of most of them.
