Log splitter hhydraulic oil change

Hi.....just joined and first post so hello to everyone.

I need some advice please.

I have the scheppach HL1010 vertical log splitter and it’s due it’s hydraulic oil change.

In the manual it says completely retract the splitting column, drain and then add 7L of new fluid.

My first question is.... does retract mean with the splitting column/blade down (under load) or when the column/blade is up (off load)

i have asked about 20 people this question and the answer seems pretty split between up and down, so I’m baffled.

Anyway.....I emptied it when the column/ blade was down and then started refilling with 7L of new stuff.

But at 4.3L it had reached the top and overflowed onto the floor.

So I raised the blade and the level went down from the top of the filling tube but still  registers an inch above the max dipstick line. Ran the machine through several cycles but still same dipstick reading.

I got all the old oil out and even tilted the machine to get the dregs so don’t think there was any left in there.

So I can’t understand why it’s overfull at 4.3L when they say drain 7L and then add 7L.

And as said earlier..... I’d love to finally know I’d retract means the column retracting down into the splitter or retracting up and out of the splitter.

Many thanks in advance

Jarratt

Retract would be with the ram fully back in its cylinder . Conversely " extend " would be fully out me thinks .  :001_smile: P.S. Don't think of it as " up " or " down " , think of it as " in " or " out " .
