Curious - A sapwood rot on Amur Maple ??

Surveyed a few mature 15+m Amur maples with this problem, crown vitality still good , but huge loss of bark and soft pulpy matter when I hit it wi my hammer ! No fungal fruits, and nothing similar on the other trees , no trunk hollowing or other signs of decay . Soil is a good loamy well drained compo , yr thoughts ?? K

There doesn't appear to be a root flare! Is it possible that the ground level had been raised or they were planted too deeply?

Nope Paul, old county boundary , with I estimate a good 60yrs uninterupted growing span- road salt could be a factor as next to busy road , but drainage is good .
