Ford ranger bother!

I've got a mk1 ranger, x reg with a really irritating rattle! It's on the gear knob, 1st the one for the gears rattled and I sorted it with a cross of insulating tape over the insert on the top. Now the gear knob for the 4wd is doing it!!!! Tape won't sort it but if I hold it it stops. Anyone had this problem and know how to sort it or get the gear knob off??
