We are always after sources of fresh 'browse' (freshly cut tree branches) to feed our animals. Mainly we're after whole branches that have been cut within the last couple of days, the fresher the better. Usually, we feed browse by hanging branches up for the animals to consume – small, chopped pieces are difficult to manage.
Anytime of year, obviously the best browse is with plenty of leaves but during the winter months we still feed browse as the animals will happily strip and eat the bark.
Common types of browse we can take include Willow, Birch, Ash, Maple, Apple, Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Pear, Poplar, Hazel, Hornbeam, Alder
We are also able to collect if the load is substantial enough to fill our van and within a 10 mile radius of the zoo.
