  1. An update for those interested. My unwell tractor has now been sick all over the floor. Engine off first, then into the rear gearbox. Problem not there so had to split the tractor. The two input shafts pass through the front box/diff. The rear end of the inner PTO shaft runs on a needle roller bearing. Sadly, this is outside the lubricated area so is completely reliant on the grease on it when installed. A dumb idea to say the least. Its clear while stored, rust has crept into it. 10 hours use later its disintegrated. Shaft has pitting and a score mark on it All stripped out. Need to get some parts. Did i mention its a dumb design? No easy way that i can see to make it lubricatable.
  2. I did wonder. But why would they be locked together? There no bush of any sort in the end of the crank. Sadly, as usual, the parts diagrams dosent show the back of the engine/flywheel. But the shaft its into a sprung plate, like a clutch plate, thats bolted direct to the crank. So its supported anyway. Obviously, if it does need one, and its not there, ive probably destroyed the front gearbox.
  3. Im back again. So after a good few hours of operation, i could no longer disengage the clutch. It also developed a loud rattle at idle from that area. After a bit of a battle, if split the engine away. Clutch is fine. There is a shaft inside a shaft. They are locked together. The leading spline is engaged to the crank, so spins all the time. The second spline engages in the clutch plate. That they are locked together effectively renders the clutch inoperative. You can wiggle the leading spline seperate to the second a touch, but they ritate together. The parts diagram, handily, omits some of this, only showing one of the 2 shafts, so im at a loss as to what they do, or what they operate. Theres also a plastic ring between the 2 splines which is loose and rattles around. Any ideas on this? Am i missing something obvious?
  4. Thanks to the legend that is dumper, who generously gave me a chunk of his time on the phone, i think ive sorted it. Basically, as above, the PTO has its own clutch. When i was pulling it, it "should" have been going over centre. It wasnt as it turns out, Because the clutch had been massively over adjusted, there was insufficent movement which meant the over centre locks couldnt clear the hub and actually lock. After unwinding it most of the way, it now goes over centre and the lever locks in. The clutch plates are visible and seem to have a resonable amount of friction lining, though i dont know what they look like new. Again, big thanks to dumper. Pic of test cut.   5. Ok, im back again. Got thing to its new home, hung a big flail off the back of it to go mowing Sadly, that did not go as planned. It might be operator error, though i dont think so. With the PTO engaged the only way i can get full drive to the flail is to pull hard on the left hand of the three levers in the first pic. It feels like it baulking. Without pressure there is "some" drive, more like its dragging. However, according to the manual, i think, this levers changes the direction of the PTO? First problem is, it doesnt matter where i put it, nothing changes, certainly not the direction. This lead to my next question. Im using the upper PTO. According to the 2nd pic below, this should go at engine crank speed. It doesnt. It seems to be running at 540 ish (when lever is pulled, cuts grass fine) The lower PTO has never been used, but i couldnt try it as i have a cover on it, and no spanners to remove. Though it seems to do whatever the one above does. So, am i not engaging something somewhere, or do i have a gear selection problem. Secondly, what is the second table telling me. What happens on the machine bears no resemblance to reality. Any help greatly appreciated. If this is a gearbox apart job, ive got a major problem. There field to be cut, and its nowhere near a workshop now.
  6. Ok, i think ive got to the bottom of this now, The middle and right hand levers both raise the hitch, clearly each using one ram only. The middle lever moves forward only to do this. It has no back position. The right hand lever however goes both ways. If you have it back AND have the 3 way valve in the correct position, then it will come down. Well sort of. You have to jump up and down on the arms to get them moving, though once moving, my weight will keep them moving. As it stands, that makes it a 2 man job. Now that i get this, all appears to be in order. Which is good given the extensive work ive done to it. Still a few electrical issues to sort, and still need to get the steering arrangement to slide and release, but thats for another day. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice on this, to someone who a numpty when it comes to tractors, any tractors.
  7. Thanks. Ive treied the valve in both positions to no effect. Does what you are saying mean the rams work entirely independantly of each other? so you can lift with or without the accumalator in circuit?
  8. Yes. Thats numder 6. Had it all to pieces. Its free to move and adjust. I havent even attempted to use the lift system since i put it all back together. The rams are still full of air rather than oil. It didnt drop even with the ram pipes disconnected. But every single part has been off, freed up, lubricated, greased etc.
  9. I think you are referring to number 6? Ive had that apart completely (it was siezed). Doent matter where i set it, it makes no difference. Im wondering if its the rams? When i put them back on, i had to compress them. Couldnt do it by hand, so had to use a press, though it took no real pressure to do so.
  10. Ok, im back. After weeks of fighting every siezed joint imaginable im very close to going for a test run. I am, however, still baffled by the hydraulics. The first issue is that the linkage never drops. Surely over time this should just sink. No amount of force will make it go down. Everything is free to move including the rams. Its alkl been off and back on. Secondly, i still dont grasp the function of the 3 levers. I have a pretty diagram, but im none the wiser. Clearly lever 10 is for attachements, like a side shift on a flail. Lever 8 is connected to the left hand ram. But also go to the three way valve, 5. And then the middle lever, 9, is connected to another valve and the accumalator. Clearly the middle and right levers have some kind of relationship Can anyone explain it to me please? What does the right hand ram do? What does the three way valve do?
  11. This is all excellent info I still have some questions though. If i use a flail, with no draft, does that mean i will have to control the height entirely manually? Or am i better propelling it the other way? I think the single valve ( only one way operation ) operates the accumulator into the lift circuit ie on or off the knob is to regulate how fast it responds Im still not sure i understand this. If i can raise and lower the lift with the 2 wy lever, what does this add to that process? check underneath the tank return could be unguarded into the front axle Guard fitted under the seat is a lift up leaver flip it up and tap the seat foreward it will slide off you should find another behind the steering column, the knob at the front alters the position of the column Yep, found those. Releasing them frees nothing. They both look to be held down with 4 nuts. Am i supposed to slacken these off as well? If not, must just be corroded on. the leaver on the side underneath the spools is the diff lock the front one being on a pedal on the side next to the top link is a leaver to change 540/1000 pto and under that the leaver to operate the ground drive pto underneath the top pto You have reffered to 3 levers here, but i only see two. One half tucked under the cab frame behind the 3 levers, another below to the right of the seat. I completely lost on this? I also see the second PTO under the plate. this doesnt look like its been removed. Ever. What function does it perform that the exposed one doesnt? take off your brake drums the shafts seize on the brake where they enter the drums bit of Thats the next job. Both completely seized. I know some of these question probably seem dumb, but ive never operated a tractor beyond moving them occasionally. At the moment, the only job i have lined up for it is soring out a field using a flail.
  12. As per my previous post, not sure what your first sentance means. Sorry. Not had a tractor before. Vertical learning curve! You could be right about the first lever, but now its fully up, i have no means of weighting it to bring it down, so cant be sure. I also remeber when fiddling that the 2 position lever behind the 3 levers does something related. I cant figure out what its for. The second lever only operates in one direction. Of course, it might be seized? I understand the principle of an accumalator it prevent surge/bounce, but what does the lever oprerate. What am i operating. It whats the knurled knob on it for?
  13. At the moment, no, it seized. And because it seized i cant get to the bolts that hold the frame down. Problem for another day. Dont know what you mean by "draught on the linkage". Would you be so good as to explain please 2 of the levers go both ways, the centre one only one way.
