Another vote for the Magnolia bud/branch but I thought 'don't make a fool of yourself again' so I kept shtum!
There are many Magnolias so I can't say the stem isn't one. What other leaves were in the litter?
Not really much more than the beech and a few oak. That said I'm only learning myself so just starting to pick up in what things are myself..

Is it a commercial plantation ? If so what are the other trees in the stand ? I think its a White pop .
Yes mate it is. Others mainly pine!!

Let me clarify I would have got more pics but sadly the tree seems to be totally dead so no leafs or buds I could see. The woodland it's in does appear to have plenty of pine/poplar in (as Mick mentioned earlier !) But the bark seems quite different which is what has sparked my curiosity

Ash ? 👍
I recall some where reading that ash bark can show in the form of diamond shapes. So that was what I was thinking it possibly was too.

and it's probably the best overall wood for firewood if it is cut split and seasoned from greed so as there is no deterioration, it is dense, dries relatively slowly but has a bright lively flame.
Exactly mate.. It's the golden egg I'm trying to find. That as well as ash I've been led to believe but I'm only learning so haven't managed yet to be 100% certain when I've found the stuff. 🤔

Odd how it’s not recognized so often.
I'm just learning and so happy I found this forum. Its so helpful to have folks like you lot that are willing to help. Only worry I have is that I send too many pics and queries and become a menace..
