Sorry, I got my wires crossed - the 4-6k quotes were for tree surgery PL I was enquiring about a while ago; forestry PL should be a lot cheaper but the first (and only) ins. company I called wouldn't insure me because I was sub-contracting and working alongside employees of the estate. The reason sounded a bit complicated but I think I got the gist of it in the end. Anyway, it turned out that I was covered by the estate's ins. so it worked out well in the end. But I still need to get PLI for myself, ideally one that covers me for occasional tree surgery jobs, too.

Thanks for these recommends, this sounds far better than the 4-6k per annum range I've been quoted so far.

I've been offered a few days work felling hardwoods for a private estate so public risk should be minimal. I remember buying PLI when I was doing forestry work in the 90s in Wales and I'm sure it wasn't more than 100 GBP for the year. Not sure what it might be these days! Cheers Colin

Hi There - are there any harvester owners in the Hampshire/West Sussex area that need a feller to do some felling? I've got my own saws, transport, tickets, etc. Very competent feller, years of experience and hard worker. happy to work full weeks or as and when needed. Cheers Colin

I've left it a bit late at 48 to start a new career but I'm determined and driven to give arboriculture/tree surgery my best shot. I had a background in forestry for 3-4 years, and after that I did teaching, mainly due to starting a family and needing a more secure and reliable income. I didn't enjoy teaching and I often missed my forest days - maybe not the working in the Welsh weather bit, though!. So now I'm putting all my efforts and resources into doing the work I think I'll enjoy for the next 10-15 years!! I have NPTC tickets from 1993 (NPTC FTC 10 to 16) which are equivalent to CS 30 to 35. I've got a full UK driving license also from '93. I'm a good, strong worker and communicator, quick at picking up new skills/routines and not afraid to ask for advice and instruction. I've got climbing and PPE gear (using just for rec climbing) and I'm booked onto Kingswood's CS 38 and 39 courses in April (if their back-log of bookings clears by then). If you're running an operation in Hampshire (Petersfield area) where you need an extra man 2-3 days-a-week or just every now-and-then on a S/E basis and would be happy to offer me the chance to learn and develop along the way (despite my mature years), please call or email or leave your contact details and I'll get in touch. Hey - thanks a lot for the info guys. I've made a list up for FR Jones, they seem to have most things and were recommended a couple of times by you - plus, I'm in Hampshire so not that far from London if I need to visit the shop sometime. Hello - Good Afternoon Where's the best online place to buy climbing gear for price, quality and support, etc.? I'm new to climbing but it's a hobby I'm planning to take up and hopefully a skill I can develop and use in the future for doing some areal tree work. I'm just researching and finding my way around the equipment and different techniques at the moment but it would be great, and hopefully maybe save time and money, if I could get most of the kit in one place.
