Thanks. Yeah, this is my concern. Of course, I want to know that it's safe. So I need to see some certification for my own peice of mind.

Sod all Devon folk yet though, sadly, Steve. Perhaps if I ad myself, I won't be able to put the phone down!
Maybe I should invest in a machine, can charge more to sit in a cab all day getting fat!

I agree with you completely. One of the main reasons I am doing this is that I want to be in control (don't we all?). It just feels like I am not at the moment, mainly subbing. All I've had to go on is what I have calculated based on all my parameters. Then I have to put this to others to see what their opinion is, or whether employers will pay it. It's difficult when your fellow subbies don't want to share their rates for comparison and employers tell you you're too steep. Like you say, too cheap themselves, or chances, or both!
Sadly, I do think a lot of Devon freelance arborists are under charging as well, which makes it difficult. What will they do when they retire and have no money? "Long time away, don't think about it"...
Unfortunately, I don't have the help to take on all my own work yet, but that seems to be the way forward. I'm kind of reliant on others for work at the moment, which is annoying...

I have had to reduce my rate because people have told me that it's steep. I think they may have been manipulating me though due to my naivety. Others have accepted without question. I have found these conversations very difficult. I feel what I expect is reasonable based on my skill level/set and overheads. I need the work at the moment, so I don't feel I'm in the driving seat

So have a fixed rate that you ad on per subbie, rather than thinking "haha, this highly skilled mug only charges 120 quid a day, so I can make an extra xxx quid out of them".

I don't think that's why people are so cagey. I think this leads to the variability of expectations. I believe that if we are all open about what we charge, prices would even out so there was less variability. The subbie would have more control as they know what is reasonable/avg for their area and what other people will pay. We would have a better idea of what's extortionate.

Why are people so cagey about their day rates? Surely if we were open, it would reduce the variability? Also, why do employers try to force people down on their rates? They shouldn't be calling the shots. You just invoice the client for that person's rate. If it's extortionate, fair enough to question, but in my opinion, we shouldn't be haggling subbies down, so we can charge a higher rate for them and skim a bit off the top. If you've worked out your overheads right, you add them to your price for the job and whatever you need to make a bit of profit. Honesty is the best policy imo. It's been difficult for me to set a rate and it seems I can charge anything from £150 to over £200 a day in Devon. £150 ain't enough to run a business, pay into a pension, cover sick days, holiday etc. Someone please tell me what you gain from the lack of openness?

... 6yrs later... Did you find anyone to do this? I am in Devon with the same need. Put a bloody spike in my nice clean rope. So annoying.

I did worry mine might might come back looking something like that, if I didn't send it to the right person. That looks terrible. Can't believe the guy that did that gave it back and told him it was safe.
