  1. I have only split one bit and the bark did not want to peel or even seem to come loose. Sadly no buds or leaves that i can see. The surgeon has a good reputation in the area and the fact that he said it was maple and you guys also say that is very encouraging!
  2. The wood definitely isnt light! the piece in the photo that has a bit taken off it was over 30kg. Not sure what you mean about peeling the bark off?
  3. Its definitely not seasoned it was cut down the day before.
  4. MMM the surgeon told me it was maple! I had my doubts but if its lime that is rather depressing as isnt it a crap fire wood?

  6. Dan, many thanks for that. I have just turned it up a bit and can hear the air being sucked in. I have a lovely window of flames but very few blue flames, and only the bottom part ( though the glass needs a good clean) even when fully roaring there is hardly any blue tinge
  7. A slight update. I Had a rummage around in the stove, moved the baffle plate up and down a bit and slid it back a bit. I made sure i used the logs were slightly smaller. The fire performed much better. I made sure it was really burning well before i shut the lower vent off. then we could control the fire from just the top vent. One thing to ask though. As a rule of thumb when the fire is established i tend to turn down the top vent until I cant really hear any induction roar - more of a chuckle. Does this sound correct or should it be more of a throaty chuckle or the full on induction roar? Many thanks
  8. The Stockton is quite a few years old but that is something to consider. Although we do have inefficient double glazing there are large gaps under the doors, and bare floorboards so there should be a good draft, But i will certainly try opening the window to see what effect that has. Its installed on a 150mm liner and i would guess the height is 20ft plus no trees or anything getting in the way "Once the stove is going close the bottom ( primary) air supply and manage the fire purely on the secondary air supply coming in above the fire." Thats the crux of the matter that often we have to have the top full open and then the bottom partially open. Wood is well seasoned chestnut never less than 18% before it goes into the woodshed so probably around 15% by the time it gets burnt. I will try the wndow option then at the weekend will have a good rummage around the inside.
  9. Problem is it didnt affect the old fire and lighting it is no problem. Its just to get a good flame you need the top vent fully open and a bottom open as well ( to varying degrees) the stockton downstairs runs fine on just the top vent open from 1/4 to 1/2
  10. That was my thinking I hall try with the fan tonight , after checking the baffle and fire bricks.
  11. Interesting. But if there was no such problem on the old Olymberyl which was only a 5k as opposed to a 7k would that not have had the worse problem? I am inclined to think it may not be getting enough air. So when we next light it I will put a small usb fan pointing into the fire place ( but not at the vents directly) and see if that changes anything. Thanks so much for all the thoughts and ideas.
  12. Openspace I did wonder that but the 1st fire we had had no problem at all. The house is very tall ( about 35ft tall from bottom to chimney top) with the problematic fire only being 8 ft higher than the bottom. No both fires arent on at the same time. If it is a draw problem would that magnify the problem or reduce it. Both chimneys are lined but not insulated. I need to get an Hetas sign off so will ask the guy if he has any thoughts. The chimney hasnt been swept for a while so I will do that as well.
  13. Well I think it should have an air brick to be fair. Before i go to the (major) faff of doing that I want to check if there are any other issues it could be?
  14. Bob, Thanks for the reply. We do have double glazing, but wooden doors. The house is 1865 so old and drafty ( the kitchen massively so) I was thinking the same thing though. Maybe will try putting a fan near the stove to see if that makes a difference.
  15. Hi all, We have just installed a MK stovax stockton 7 in the living room. It has replaced an Olymberyl Palladin. The olymberyl was a joy to use and easy to start and control. We seem to be really struggling to keep the flames going on the stockton. when I left for work tonight the primary air was half open and the secondary was almost fully open and there was a nice flame. But the flame drops dramatically if you shut down the primary. To make matters worse we have a mk 2 stockton 8 downstairs and, although it needs lots of wood, it chucks out loads of heat and is easy to control. The wood is the same for both fires, the only thing i can think of is that when we had the Olymberyl there was a hole ( about 10mm) in the fireplace to the outside and this has now been covered up with fireboard. We only got the stockton as we wanted a bigger fire with bigger window and the 8 was so nice to use! Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance
