Thanks to all for the suggestions.
I never drop start saws. Pawls and spring are good. I seem to recall the cord 'whipping back' prior to the first broken pulley - but not the second. The (original cord) is a couple of inches shorter after I cut the knot above the starter handle twice.
Think I'll try a new (full length) cord and being less 'aggressive'!

Was using my (fairly new) Husky 435 II and heard a rattling sound. Subsequent investigation revealed that the starter pulley had broken. Fitted a genuine replacement, started the saw up and shut it down around 5 times - only to find the exact same thing had happened again!
Am (understandly) reluctant to fit another pulley without understanding what the cause might be. Has this happened to anyone else?

That’s probably what I do wrong I don’t reproof them I get about 6 months before they start falling to pieces. I find the cheaper pair than the Yukon’s seem to last longer and are of better material. What do you you use to reproof them?
Urad Jojo Waterproofing and Conditioning Wax. You can get it on Amazon - gets great reviews!

The Oregons Yukons fit me well and are cheap. I just accept that they will need replacing more often and try and remember to re-proof them regularly!

You could keep an eye on property auctions. Not sure where you are but I used to check in on this one:
Land And Property Auctioneers UK - Clive Emson
Clive Emson is one of the UK's leading property and land auctioneers. View, bid on, purchase and sell your property...I live in East Sussex, just a few miles from one of the woods that a well-known wood lotting company is currently selling in c2 acre plots at £18,000 per acre - and they are actually selling We bought just over 16 acres of ancient woodland in March 2020 from one of the 'other ones' - just before everyone and their dog wanted their own 'COVID-free' open space. Had to borrow some of the purchase price but it worked out at £9,750 per acre - so fortuitious timing.

What do Members use instead of the (discontinued) Stihl Scriber Hook?
Petrol or alkylate for a new saw?

I use saws (all less less 4 years old) when not at my main (non forestry job). I use mostly an E5 petrol-oil mix - to keep down costs - but, every 4-5 fills, use Aspen in the belief (which may be mistaken!) that it helps to clean the spark plug and combustion chamber.
However, I use Aspen all the time in my petrol mower because it starts more easily and I don't get through as much as if I was using it permanently in the saws.
