Just wondering why the government is having to spend so much money accommodating the migrants whenever people like this, nevermind the number of BBC employees on extremely generous taxpayer funded salaries, are so supportive of their continued arrival.

Surely they could put them up in their own homes, or at least pay for it themselves. A sort of "adopt a migrant scheme" similar to Giant Pandas or Tigers, etc.

If they done something like that, it might remove the notion that people like her, plus the good Mr Lineker and his ilk, are actually just virtual signalling nimby whingebags rather than good samaritans with a genuine concern for those less fortunate than themselves.

Apparently Lineker did host a  refugee in his home back in 2021. We have a Syrian family living locally who seem to have settled in well to rural Cumbria.

Main problem I have with most electric cars is that if I have to eventually have one I just want one that looks like a normal car but happens to be electric instead of petrol or diesel. Whereas most of them look weird.

Which cars look so outlandish that you don't want to drive them? Electric mini looks like a mini. Tesla model S  looks like a generic saloon. New Audi looks like a yummy mummy's SUV. BMW id3 looked a bit different but had some genuine engineering reasons for doing so.

Have you got a source for this because I couldn't find anything after a quick Google.

Around the world you can argue planting trees can be beneficial to the environment of those countries, think reversing desertification that sort of thing, the UK and most northern counties not so much as we have large amounts of forest and managed and productive farmland.

What is the point of planting trees on valuable arable land ?. What is your goal, carbon dioxide reduction at the expense of growing it in the 3rd world?.

I don't think we do have a large %of forest. According to a quick Google search around 13%. 138th out of 191 countries.

meanwhile china has 1110 coal fired power stations.

China has the greatest number of coal-fired power stations of any country or territory in the world.

Quick Google search suggests they burn less coal per capita than Australia and Poland to name two countries. Germany likes a bit of coal electric but import it from Poland for green credentials.

no they dont. Australia, USA etc

    Culture is allways the issue.

     rule of thumb:

    Lefty country = shithole

    Normal = not shithole.

I think the British tested nukes in Australia in the 1950s. Doesn't mean it is a shithole though

Yes, but having lower horsepower means if takes longer to chip up than it did before, therefore running the chipper for longer, therefore putting out the same amount of carbon !

It's like when the eec  told us our kettles were too powerful., so haveing a kess powerful kettle took longer to boil, therefore using the same energy as the higher wattage one.

I never knew that kettles had been regulated against as well

  8. I've got a Chinese 660. It's done a bit of milling, a bit of felling larger trees and a bit of firewood. No major issues, just the starter chord mechanism is a bit soft. Oil cap can undo itself unless tightened with a combi spanner. I don't do a lot with big trees anymore so didn't want to spend £1000ish on a proper one. It is considerably more powerful than my mates old and tired Stihl 660.

I’ve got an even better one. Stop taxing people like battery hens and they’ll see themselves through. People on average have half their wealth taken in tax (a simplistic appraisal but run with it). If someone had worked for twenty years without being taxed, they could ride out a storm for another twenty years on the saved tax money alone. As it is at the moment, the government’s got about ten minutes of money in reserve because it spent the “bit of money” its collected over the years on bollocks.

No tax = no road maintenance, no schools, no universities, no NHS, no rail infrastructure, no pensions or unemployment benefits. Would also lead to mass unemployment.

  10. Seems to be a lot of concern about how much archaeologists and ecologists are getting paid. The bs5837 survey has and will be worth a few quid. That's before the actual site clearance work.  Instead of moaning about how much it will cost jump on the gravy train!

  11. HS2 will cost a lot but if it reduces the number of cars on the road it will benefit many people. The construction cost is high but rail journeys don't always cost a fortune and can be a relatively stress free way of traveling. Kendal to Manchester airport for £6.50 one way means it can be cheaper than driving. My brother in-law spends a lot of time in London and usually takes the train, his take on it is that capacity is the problem not speed. Even if HS2 is expensive the old line can be used for those not on company expenses.

  12. Years ago I had to remove some poplars that had mysteriously died in someone's yard. The owner of the yard had asked network rail to remove the trees the year before and had been told no as they were not a risk to the railway. After the trees got ringbarked network rail were happy to pay for their removal! Network rail really don't like trees falling on their lines so if it can be suggested that the tree poses a threat to the line they may well remove them free of charge.
