Hello to everyone! What is your opinion regarding breaking-in a diesel engine on a chipper ? The engine manual says not to work the engine at maximum rpm for the first 20 hours. The chipper manufacturer says to go full on after 1 tank (4.7lt) for 15-20' and then lower it for 5-6'. He said full on because otherwise it cannot chip the branches we have here (work mostly with olive tree). Thinking to stick with the no max for 20 hours, but dont know what to do all this time!! Should I just keep it with the load of the chipper drum&blades or should I try to chip some material as well ? Should I operate it continuously for 1 tank or stop before ? Let me know what is your experience! Thanks!

its illegal here too, but there arent any checks from the state I reckon the machine is produced here, only some parts are imported e.g. the Loncin diesel engine (which has a user manual) so if @nepia has instructions re the blades at least, that would be useful ! so please send!! another topic is if someone has tried to convert the chips to pellet like material ?

say, any of the chippers have a user manual ? my machine producer only included the manual for the engine, the rest are up to a phone call.. I'm seriously intrigued to see what they write actually!

Regarding ear noise protection: I read that decibels at a small CS (80 or 100) machine is around 100db, so I guess in all such small machines is the like of it. I operated such a machine without ear protection and I had some "after bells". So what do you have that is satisfying protecting your hearing ? A quick search on the net, shows that the max db protection is NRR 37 decibels. Is listening to music helpful or more destructive maybe ? Thinking of combining ear plugs with ear muffs. Cheers!

how much fuel consumption you have with that engine ? ok I know, it depends on more factors, but lets see an average ! is it as Honda says: 6.7 L/hr - 3 600 rpm what is the rpm you normally use ? ok, again it depends on many factors, but if you can summarize it. I start to think that an hour meter and a rpm meter are quite useful and cheap..

for a professional use of a small size machine with the 420cc size ~13hp engine, what would you choose between: a petrol and a diesel engine and why ? for me the interest goes with: 1.performance 2.reliability 3.fuel consumption The input I had so far is that the diesel is lower in fuel consumption, lower in performance and more expensive on the parts and any repair vs the petrol engine. Also the diesel has more vibrations, so more demanding on the machine's body. Chip in here please!

Totally agree on the device - necessary add-on ! Re the hours, is that your experience coming from a CS machine/blade ?

I don't think it works like that, since there are a number of qualities of blades and also there is a variety of material to be chipped affecting the life of a blade. Last, but not least, there is the case of pebbles, stones etc that also affect the blade's life. So, all in all, I don't think that that argument is valid. On the more general issue discussed : A person I know, used a Chinese made product (using also a Loncin engine) that has a EU country label on (with possibly some local fixes/improvements), who has told me that he had been using it to clear a logged area, continuously for 6 months and for 5-7 hours/day. The machine had 2 exhausts replaced and some bolts. The machine is at the typical range of 2000€.

What size of a chip does your machine produce ? Does the chip size has variables that it depends upon, such as type of wood, dry,soft etc ? I would like to hear what machine users say also !
