Do you mean your cutting the log or splitting it with an axe?
If you're cutting then look at the canter lever style saw horses
If you're splitting with an axe then a tyre round your log can be great

The norm is 2 cuts, this gives the slowest burn. I've done them with 3 and even 4 cuts before
Douglas Fir is a great wood for them

Split wood is always gonna dry quicker and better.

I use silver birch bark and strips of amazon cardboard.
As for egg boxes, why not ask your neighbours/local fb group/fb Market Place. Ask people to keep a load for you and then nip round and collect them.
My mate has loads of chickens and sells eggs and I keep all my boxes over winter for him to use as the chickens don't lay
