Hi I’m struggling with this a bit as not that mechanically minded .attempted at changing the above parts but the main bolt had snapped off right at the end so I have it all stripped down trying to access it but getting the gearbox apart isn’t very easy .are they even designed to come apart ?

All I ever do is find where the shaft stops turning, if at all and once you find where the drive power ends...you see what is knackered.

From your description, if the shaft is turning with decent power and you can't stop it by gripping it with cloth, it will be either a worn shaft end (pretty rare) or the trimmer gearbox has gone and the screwdriver check should tell you this.....then it is a strip down if the gearbox has failed. Can't say they are easy to work on but you can fix them!

Is this the earlier trimmer head with an alloy body or the white and orange painted one that replaced it?

Ive not had it apart yet but since noticed though the adjustable head seems loose and grease nut seems to have came off when it broke which is a bit strange .at a guess it looks likely the gearing will need replacing

  3. If it’s laurels then I’d just chop it much lower than that (6-7ft) as will very quickly regrow and it’s an easier working height

But It sounds as though if it’s a large conifer you could likely regret starting the job without charging a higher rate so I would get into said bush and thoroughly assess how much material is in there  before you possibly end up with an endless supply of brash and working for almost  nothing !

Take the cutter attachment off, grip the shaft with a cloth and get someone else to rev the machine lightly. What you are doing is making sure the clutch and shaft are OK.

Common issues are the clutch shoes rusting and sticking shut....usually after rain and storage.

The shaft ends can wear but not very common.

Sometimes people don't mesh the shafts correctly on the Kombi units and sometimes the trimmer heads aren't pushed on fully.

Inspect the ends of the shaft to make sure they are still well formed and square.

The gearbox may have failed but they are usually pretty strong. You can put a flat head screwdriver in to where the square shaft would go and try turning the screwdriver to turn the trimmer so it operates slowly. Mind your fingers, the cutters can be damn sharp!!

    Report back what you find.

    Good advice.Thanks

should have Mentioned also it’s not the kombi model so not as easy to tinker with but it sounds as though the drive rod just spins round inside so maybe it is the shaft end which broke.

  5. Very annoyingly Earlier today the new stihl  hl94 went the same way as the old  longreach  hedge cutter and the motor goes fine but wont engage with the cutters (and makes that odd sound like not right at all ) .it had the grease regularly topped up but I think it was likely overworked cutting stuff too big and gear box now duff ?

Last time with this problem I was told it would be expensive to fix so sold the old machine it as a non runner.

to top it off it wasnt  even on a  paid job as it was helping family for a few hours .really typical

  6. I have tried various hedge cutter and didn’t really rate hs82 for similar reasons and thought it was bit underpowered for the bulky size/ weight .id say try the HSA86 with ap300 battery has a good weight and powerful enough to chop most stuff .hs45 is ok but I find the power control a bit annoying so cable tied down !

the cordless one would do around 3.5-4 hrs

  7. Flipped a few bikes over lockdown for modest profit mostly as a hobby .had a go on other stuff since then and been let down numerous times so loosing interest .one time waster cost me 200 quid in transport going to collect with loader and came back with no car .lots of people seem to say stuff along the lines of it won’t take much to get it going needs say £20 of parts etc  and been offered X amount in scrap I.e 400 .or another is simply scrap car men in disguise trying to move on overpriced old tosh only fit for crusher .lots of con men out for themselves!

  8. I’d have thought trying to resolve it in a polite neighbourly fashion is the best  approach if that can work

once had a similar problem with a garden that had about a 10M bamboo hedge growing alongside neighbour wall .It came under the wall into next door and the neighbours of the woman got funny about it and threatened with legal action etc .next thing you know I had dug the whole lot out and checked next door for any roots  ,seemed like the only way to guarantee nothing will ever return ,installing a root barrier wasn’t really an option there either .

if no solution with neighbours is found I’d just keep spraying any new shoots with a strong glyphosate for now.

  9. Probably discussed many times with work gear but I’ve tried many different brands of trousers  and there all  not quite right for what I wanted and just end up being worn only a few times .Would like some  very similar to the husqvarna classic ones in there old style  which fit nicely  but without the  saw protection but still strong and reinforced for hedge cutting strimming etc .also needs lots of easy movement so not asking for much !

WOW I love it!!! an absolute perfect piece! Sad you don't you like it anymore :(

Thanks .Yes Surprisingly hard to get good corners and grain etc which match up with design but still not quite right .thinking that I might sand the varnish off and might look a better colour  🤔 or just try another one at some point

I wonder if autotune/m-tronic cope with e10 better?

I stand by my old suggestion of mixing Aspen with petrol half and half, to offset the crappyness of the petrol and reduce the cost of the Aspen. Optimum, always shooting for the optimum.

My mtronic all over the place despite attempts to reset etc .sometimes too fast then too slow or hardly goes at all so load of useless shit .I blame it on changing between motomix and unleaded

  12. I don’t think it runs that well in the car either .probably part of there attempt to phase out older vehicles .some random video the the other week said a gallon of unleaded in Russia is the same price as a litre here so we’re being mugged off again .next in a few months bp etc will be saying they made record profits

The fact that E10 is shit in some small engines and they use more for a given run time makes Alkylate fuel a better proposition .

Yep back to motomix next time .also heard that normal petrol just turns to almost like water when the fuel cans been opened a few times in the sun and all the actual good stuff has escaped!
