  2. Hello folks. Thinking about getting a new timber trailer to help extracting logs. It's only a small wood with narrow tracks and I use a compact tractor on flotation tyres to get around & carry equipment so don't want to go with anything too big. I'm thinking something no bigger than about 5 tonne & think I would like a crane. Any recommendations of what to look at? Would prefer to buy new. Thanks all.
  3. Thank you all for your input. I did consider propping but unfortunately there is only 2 limbs low enough and 1 of those is in quite a bad way, with a rotted stub from a previously removed branch that has rotted back into the limb itself. The worst shaped limbs are all right in the crown and are so bent to be virtually touching the floor. I'll have another look at it and see where we end up. Many thanks.
  4. Finally got a signal strong enough for a picture.
  5. No don't know how long they live but yes that's pretty much what I'm thinking, reduction rather than pollard. At least we get a chance with it then and if it doesn't work out it can come down in a couple of years?
  6. Hi folks, I do a lot of work on a large country estate and amongst the specimen trees are 2 mature, approx 50yrs, Mulberry trees. Unfortunately due to the weight of fruit on them and some recent storms one of them has suffered a large break with many of the other limbs deformed and bent over. Limbs that should be 15-20 ft in the air vent over touching the ground. The owners have asked me to pollard back which I think is the right thing to do to save further damage and protect the tree. However never having dealt with Mulberry before thought I might just ask for some opinions. My initial thought is not to go to hard and leave the basic structure as it is. Over to you guys.
  7. Thanks guys for all the comments it's very interesting and I am liking the idea of the branch logger, especially as Wellmac are only an hour up the road. Does anyone know anything about Kellfri? They appear to have a decent looking chipper at around the same sort of price as woodland mills.
  8. List price would be a start, didn't see a single price when I was looking. In my experience when companies don't want to disclose their prices publicly it's because they know they are asking too much and need to accompany the price tag with a sales spiel. Just imho.
  9. Thanks PeteB, I was looking at new for the main reason that I don't know what I would be looking at used. I know 1 end of a spanner from the other so not a numpty but when it comes to specialist bits of kit you need to know what your looking at and I don't know anyone in the trade I can with me either. I'm going to assume from the website and the fact that even the dealers have got "poa" against them that Greenmech are a little pricey?
  10. Could well be interested, can you do PM's on here? Found it, sent you my email.
  11. Thanks Shavey, very helpful. Perhaps PeteB if you wouldn't give the Woodland Mills machines yard space you could recommend a machine I could look at instead?
  12. From web research I'm liking the look of the Woodland Mills WC 68 & 88. Both reasonable prices and look to be decently put together . I do note the 88 says min power requirement of 30hp which may steer me to the 68. I have 2 tractors I can use for this, 35hp & 80hp with the 35hp machine having big flotation tyres so I can get into the wood in the winter and not cause a mess. Any personal experience with either of these machines?
  13. Sounds more like what I'm looking for, the elusive middle ground. Will try and do a bit of research and see what I can find. Had a quick look at Wallenstein but their website is a bit dodgy. I did get on but looking at the smaller models, they are very light, only 145kg for the entire machine verses 400 kg for a timber wolf. I know there's a price difference but thats a lot of metal that's missing.
  14. Yes that is for a new machine. Actually I do have a way of using proper chip with the wife's chickens and geese, not that they are costing anything at the moment but the chip would be out to use. Didn't see anyone selling Techmar new, only used, are they still going? Does anyone know anything about Woodland mills, the American company? Very slick website.
  15. Wow the cheapest Farmi machine I can find is over £7k, double what I have to spend.
  16. Yea habitat piles are nice and will be doing that with some of it but at the end of the day they don't heat the house. Will investigate the farmi machines though, cheers.
  17. Hi folks, So last year I asked and got some excellent advice on choosing a saw so thought I'd come back to ask about chippers. We have 10 acres of mixed broadleaf woodland including a lot, of what is now, dead ash which I am going to start taking out. So I'm looking to invest in a chipper, obviously as a farmer I have tractors about the place so a pto driven machine seemed an obvious choice but having a basic look around it seems you can get eBay rubbish for a grand or so or pro machines for 5 grand + with nothing in between. Needless to say my budget falls slap bang in the middle. So over to you guys, we have log burners so won't be chipping anything over 4". Machine can be pto or with its own engine and then I can go off farm which would be helpful. What's your recommendations please?
  18. Sorry no I was comparing the 450 and the 545. Slight difference in power, noise and chain speed but otherwise don't know.
  19. Was just looking at it actually and trying to figure out what the difference is?
  20. The budget was decided by how much money I've got basically and besides there are many many saws of similar spec that vary wildely in price. The question is rather how am I best to spend my available funds to perform said task. To extend your car comparison, there are many people in the world pulling big trailers across muddy fields but only a few doing it with Landcruisers & Rangerovers and many with metaphorical Kia's, mud tyres and chains.
  21. Yes seen a few mentions of different fuels, guess not just the stuff from Tesco's [emoji6] was originally looking at a husky 435 which seemed great value for 250 quid but I'm guessing a bit of a DIY machine so pushed the budget to 400. I'm reluctant to go more but a 550 for £500 would I suppose always be up to the job. Bit worrying though having to double the budget
  22. Thank you folks, from the recommendations the husky 450 and the makita 5121 are the only ones I can stretch to. Seen lots of pro comments for Husqvarna but not that specific model, also not seen much comment on makita. Any thoughts?
  23. When I looked yesterday it was out of stock at the first 2 and skyland & honey didn't come up on any searches so obviously didn't look at them. Not that it matters, the budget is £400 so this is will over anyway.
  24. Thanks for the advice guys, going to have a trip to a couple of local dealers next week. The 450 looks promising and on budget, talk about stretching the budget there's some £600 saws in there folks! Is the 365 a current model, can't find it for sale anywhere?
  25. Dolmar looks impressive, where to get one in the UK though?
