Ask the tosser if he's got any more stuff for sale etc cash on hip, your starting up (they'll think you'll buy anything and haven't got a clue) get as much info as possible on the kit ie, serial no, years, damage distinctive marks etc. Ask for a viewing and go round with a couple of mates. Then drop the bombshell of its yours if your comfortable doing so. Plod alone will take so long, the kit will be sold, used and blown up by the time they get their arses in gear. It happened to a friend of mine last year with his br 600. Met them at Hilton services walsall, yellow transit blocked them in with his landy and soon had the blower back. That was sold via tree bay.

  2. I went back to using a prussik the other day and preferred it to my HC [emoji23] does anyone find the hitch climber or anything like that abit of a faff on ascent? I love the one hand tending on returning in from branch walking or taking up abit of slack but for ascent it's a pain

  3. Yes it was on public road, a garage on the a5 dordon. So I thought legal. Must be more stupid 😂 Ford ranger, ifor trailer and a tw125 presumably attached by a towball on the trailer. It would have saved me dropping trailer off to come back for chipper on some jobs of my own. Not worth it though by the sounds of it

  4. Definitely get a transit type tipper. You can't get bugger all chip in a double cab tipper. I run both, but if that's not a option for you then what about a cheap family car and transit tipper or a double cab transit

    I'm thinking of s/c transit and family runaround. I could borrow/hire a 4x4 if needs be. I've had a look around and I rekon I could get a half decent one for 4/5k.

  5. I think it is an ideal oportunity for you. If you can get £350 great, but i would say that is the top end without chipper. Have you the tipper or 4x4 (or both), whatever is most related to works you do?

    I was hoping to buy a pickup before the conversation for the odd jobs I get. I'd IDEALLY have both as I wouldn't lose the family aspect of a vehicle like I would if I just had a van. The van would be more worthwhile though as it's mainly domestic work rarely going off the beaten track

  6. I sub myself, Groundy, tipper and chipper out for £400 day. I think this is a reasonable amount, although probably should be more. I don't do this everyday though as I do my own work as well which makes me more.

    Thanks for the reply, just trying new things as I've always said I don't think I would be able to start a business up from scratch, I was kind of hoping this to be a nice chance at a nice start to my own setup being (almost) guaranteed a slight bit of income without trying to compete with a million others.

  8. Hi all, me and my boss had a chat the other night and as he knows eventually I will more than likely fly the nest, he proposed I get a van, a lad and sub to him. Does this sound a good idea? I would probably be using his 150 chipper, so I'm good for a chipper until I can afford one myself. I'm hoping to be charging around 350 per day. Does this seem too steep? Could anyone do me a rough idea of take home from that price. I know it's difficult to say but I've just been on arbrisk insurance and haven't recieved a quotation straight away so I haven't really got an idea of insurance prices etc. I'm hoping around 200 per day wage. Does that seem doable? Any advice appreciated I'm abit clueless as I've been PAYE for 5 years. Thanks

  9. Hi Guys

     

    Bought myself an MS440 second hand, my first used saw and it is quite tired..

     

    I have been through the basic service tasks (removing the woodland from the oil reservoir, changed filters etc but I need to go a bit further..

     

    Now, a Genuine recoil starter assembly will set me back +-£70 but aftermarket only £23... This is the same when I am searching all parts.. especially service parts like rim sprockets etc..

     

    Does anyone have experience of good/bad aftermarket parts, should I? or is it just not worth it in the long run.. Do you really get what you pay for with Stihl??

     

    Any constructive advice gratefully received

    I tried an aftermarket chain brake handle on my ms390. It broke after one day, but caused alot of other damage as a section broke off and jammed the mechanism cracking the plastic casing of the saw. Now I have to run the saw without a brake. I wouldn't recommend personally

  10. Definitely prove you were cloned. It's happening alot more than people realise. Cctv along the route showing the vehicle, which wont match logbook, specs from manufacturer showing top speed etc, and take it to court.

     

    You really need photographic proof of a different vehicle on the route with your plates

    2 vehicles, 2 or 3 blokes? Doesn't look like it's particularly favourable for climbing, certainly not rigging, can't tell distance to roadside from the pics.

     

    Can't understand how you'd punt it at £450?

    I'm from just north of stafford

    2 men for the day on that.

    Obviously I can't tell the drag, from what I can see I can't really see the reason for any rigging? Plenty of ratchet straps (occurrence in a couple of posts) I'd drop a few down for a brash mat, and crack on. Like I said a pure guesstimate. Back to OP, hope you get it sorted.

    The willow tree at the bottom of our garden has been split by storm Doris.

     

    Have you any suggestions as to whether it can be saved or should it just be felled?

     

    Also could you estimate the costs for the options? Based in Merseyside.

    Hi, in my opinion, I would remove the tree in its entirety. You could pollard the tree to just below the crack, it would reshoot, but would be a waste of time with no real amenity.

    I'm not from your area, so I'm unable to give a solid quote, but if it was me I'd be around the 450 mark, all waste away. There could be a high possibility of a mewp being required, upon inspection when quoting.

  14. Went to look / quote a beech tree today to dead wood its quite a big tree and noticed that its got a load of white spots all over the bark about 1/2 way up the main trunk. Had a look around the base and were possible from the ground couldnt see any fungus growths. Any ideas what the white spots are are they harmfull to the tree?

    Have a look at beech scale, not sure if it is spots or more whole areas covered in a white ashy type stuff

  15. You don't cut past the pollard bowl if repollarding ,tell him to read the British standards 3998 for tree work that may throw him a bit... never read them but I pressume pollarding is in there.

    I've never read them myself, but I also heard that certain trees you actually cut the new growth above the heads. Could be wrong though.

  16. A repollard is a repollard.

    If that's the spec you could end up cutting stuff telegraph pole thickness or above.

    Agreed, but the job specs don't add up, 1/4 load away and 3 hours to do the job. That's all we get paid. I don't get any more for taking more waste away or staying longer (unless the job has been massively underestimated ) I believe I did as told, "repollard tree causing disruption to satellite signal" never said anything like "repollard to X meters" or "repollard and reshape tree" as previously used on other works. Client was happy.
