  2. I've been in this game now for 15 years and am now making serious consideration to packing it all in and starting a new business.  I love this job, pretty much everything about it but there has been one constant throughout the entire time running my business that has given me the same issues.  STAFF!

I like to think i'm a reasonable easy going boss.  I never rant and rave, I pay my staff well, let them have early days most weeks, and regularly buy them lunch or a pint after work.  Despite that they come and go.  Most of the time they are asked to leave as they simply are not up to the job despite coming out of colleges with all the tickets and thinking they know the job.  They could learn it for sure but it seems no one has the desire to really be the best they can these days and simply want an easy life.  I am thinking a lot of this is due to the training courses not giving a realistic expectation of what the job truly entails.  I think it should all go back to where it began with the old YTS schemes, with trainees working on £30 a week but getting hands on training as they go.  Everyone on those schemes got a true taste of what the job was and also knew that if they performed, not only would they get their tickets but would come out of it with a job for life.  Fast forward to now where everyone completes a 1 or 2 year course and automatically assumes they have earned a job for life.  Why were these schemes abolished?

As I said, I am literally on the verge of packing it all in.  Just can't handle the stress anymore and despite what I do its pretty obvious that its something thats out of my control.  I know i'm not the only one as I see the same companies repeatedly posting on here and elsewhere for staff.  I feel their pain!

Despite saying earlier I never rant and rave, I guess thats more or less what i'm doing as I don't believe there is an answer out there to solve this problem!
In my honest opinion the problem isn't always the "youths" (granted some are lazy cunts). You need a shit deflector, I'm not talking about a manager but a first step line manager like a lead climber who has the right attitude and a good sense of leadership. Leadership isn't the ability to tell someone what to do or how to do it, it's the ability to get someone to want to do something they ordinarily wouldn't do, in this case earn their wage and graft.

Having this person in your company will ease your work load and make your life simpler. However you have to find him/her.

  3. I think that is a website from some people pretending to be official but actually trying to make money from you.
This is from the official site, where it does mention gardener but specifically under building, construction and demolition waste. I still reckon you are lower tier for tree work.

What is building, construction and demolition waste?
This waste typically includes soil, concrete, bricks, glass, wood, plasterboard, asbestos, metal and plastic.
It can be produced as part of a large construction project or a smaller business activity, like a general builder replacing a bathroom, or a gardener replacing fence panels and paving slabs.
Yeah I know it's not from the gov website I was just looking for information on it. Thanks.
  4. It’s lower tier for Wöod chip and logs, I had ours checked last Friday and could not use the recycling centre unless it was produced ... is a gardener getting rid of soil ?? Any building waste is regarded as higher.

Thanks, that helps. Yeah could be the reason.
  5. I've not seen any special rule for gardeners - where did you find that?

Everything on the official sites I found says that because the waste is only what you have produced through your business then you would be a lower tier carrier - free registration without requiring renewal. Pretty easy to do on the www.gov.uk website as I remember.

I think I had to fill in my number when registering for an account at the local transfer station so have used mine for sure.

If you scroll down to the tiers it gives a couple of examples and gardener is one of them.
  6. I’d be interested to see how many people ever have to show their waste carriers licence who are small scale self employed concerns.
Personally, I’ve been asked to show it once in 22 years at a landfill !!!!
    (I didn’t have it with me !!!! Oops !!)
I work for a fella at the moment and we've never been asked when we have been to a recycling place so not sure if he has one, I know quite a few people dont.
  7. Hi all.

I'm looking at going self employed and I'm unsure as to which of the two types we fall under.

The EA say that it's lower tier if the waste is produced directly from works carried out by your business, however I've seen that the licencing website quotes gardeners as requiring an upper tier licence. I'm not a gardener but I'm not sure whether we would be grouped in with them or am I missing something?

    Cheers

    Adam.

  8. The core strands of friction cord are pretty much just there to add bulk, not strength; so if you shock load worn friction cord it's more likely to snap, as opposed to a purpose made rope-bridge which has a core with a much higher tensile strength. So you should always use a proper rope bridge, apparently.

Which is a bit arse-about-face come to think of it given that friction cord suffers much greater abrasion but is still life-support [emoji848]

Guess it isn't affected by the same metal-on-rope bend radius that a rope bridge would be?

    Can anyone elaborate?
Friction cord is still subjected to sever bend radiuses. A lot of people make their own custom length friction hitches with a fisherman's on a bight as well as sewn eye cord.

Also they can still be subjected to shock loading forces if you fall whilst using them as either prusik or another friction hitch.

  9. ( Used to climb on VT system an lil pulley - good set up fr Drt - but going to SRT , you need a rope wrench an it was all a big faff an clattered around yr harness n was annoying me. I only crown inspect , do OPM an recreation climb now , so it aint getting hammered daily )
    Thanks that's pretty helpful.
  10. I have used it Drt Adam, but bought it fr SRT,  did want a no-knot system, and am pleased with it. Definately need to select the right rope fr it. Didn't like my New England 13mm Hi Vee, I use the Teufel 12mm an it's  fab [emoji4] k
Sorry forgot to ask about how it wares and slippages

Did you go from a hitch climber to it or from a device, I'm currently using a spiderjack 2 which I like on a 13mm rope but I'm looking at changing to a thinner line as well. Not really intending on going srt but I like the idea of being able to apply it mid line.
  12. Brexit would make that rather pointless k ( I like mine )
I imagine that CE markings will be migrated into British law if they aren't already.

Do you use it for drt or just srt? I'm really keen on trying one however if I can't get on with it I'm stuck with an expensive paper weight.
