  1. Ok... I've now just got back in the from the garage after taking it all apart again and putting the sprockets on the other way round. The clutch cable seems a bit tight when then clutch lever is in its standard position though. How do I slacken it off?

     

    If I ever seen a mower in bits again it will be too soon!

  2. Cheers gardenkit I appreciate your help... I've just fitted a new clutch cable, although the feel of the clutch lever now feels better there is still no drive. I've left the blade and plastic cover off the bottom of the mower and had a look underneath whilst it's running. All the belts and the gearbox seem to be rotating as they should. The only thing not replaced now is the two belts...

     

    When I pull the mower backwards it will freewheel, when I try and push it forwards it is locked. From that description do you think the sprockets are on the right way?

  3. I swear this mower is going to end up like triggers broom!

     

    I acquired a Hayter Harrier 56 pro and I have fully serviced the roller with new bearings and sprockets, replaced the gearbox (!) and still it doesn't drive.

     

    The only thing I have not replaced that I can imagine it is, is the clutch cable? In the manual it suggested that the tension on the spring at the gearbox end is 13mm, what I am not sure of if this is when the clutch lever is at 60mm or whether it is in a static position...?

     

    The spring on my cable when in a standard position is nearly 1 inch... Before throwing the towel in and taking it to the dealer do you think I should buy a new clutch cable? The owners guide isn't particularly easy to follow about adjusting the cable so I don't want to buy a new one and face the same issue.

  4. So... After doing all this and being happy with the play on the roller I rotated the engine at the end where the blade fastens to and noticed that it isn't turning the rollers around...

     

    Could the gearbox possibly have gone as well? Is there a way to check? Apparently it needed pushing before I bought it...

  5. As you have already bought and fitted the overrun sprockets you dont want to waste the effort by welding the roller up. Save that for when the sprockets fail again next year!

     

    I could not open your video, but am guessing that you can move the two roller halves apart, probably by about 3 or 4mm?

     

    You need to make sure the bronze bushes in the roller ends are intact with the 'top hat' flange in place. If not, replace the bushes.

    Then add shims (washers) between the bearings and the bushes to push the roller halves together. allowing just a little play.

    I've studied the top hat bushes and they seem fine from the outside but I am wondering if the inside face of the top hat bush has worn so much that it is causing the play?

     

    I actually reassembled the whole lot with new roller shaft support bearings, noticed the play so decided to strip it down again. In the process I couldn't get one of the bearings off again with my puller and thus broke the bearing case as I had to put so much torque into the puller...!

  6. Hi folks, sorry to bring up an old post!

     

    I have just taken apart my new second hand hayter harrier 56 pro (thanks to this excellent forum) to service the roller (I have never done anything like this before on mowers but restore cars so am quite practical).

     

    I've installed new bearings on the end of the roller and new sprockets but upon reassembly I have noticed ALOT of sideways play where the rollers are sliding on the shaft...

     

    Can anyone advise if I should/can shim up the gap or is there something else wrong with it?
