This weekend many skilled, hardworking arborists will be out in sometimes dangerous conditions to help clear up the damage left by Storm Eunice. The Arboricultural Association would like to acknowledge the efforts of these professionals who help keep the country safe and moving. We would also urge members of the public to avoid fallen trees and remember that arboriculture is a skilled job, and it is always safest to engage a suitably qualified and experienced professional rather than trying to tackle the problem yourself. Two-day event De Vere Tortworth Court, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire 24 & 25 January 2022 Trees are an essential part of the environment, providing a wide range of ecosystem services. Trees also provide food and shelter for wildlife. Cavities, splits and hollows, which were historically described as ‘defects’, are now known to provide habitat for numerous wildlife species. Among the wildlife species which use trees for shelter are bats, with 14 of the 17 UK bat species known to roost in trees. Book Your Place Book Your Stand Despite the high level of legal protection, recent research has highlighted the difficulties of effectively surveying trees for bats. Bats frequently move roosts making it difficult to know if a tree is used by bats. As bat roosts are protected whether bats are present or not, this has serious implications for tree management. There is a growing number of ecologists who climb trees to look for bats and also a growing number of arborists developing an increase in ecology. Whilst some cross-discipline working is taking place, there is scope for much more. By running a two-day event on the topic of Bats and Trees we hope to encourage more ecologists and arborists to work together, sharing knowledge and experience. Bats and Trees has two main aims: Improving the quality of surveys undertaken, which in turn will improve the conservation of tree-roosting bat species; and Improving the safety of those involved with trees surveys for bats. ARB Show at APF 2022 Thursday 22nd to Saturday 24th September 2022 The Arboricultural Association is pleased to announce that after two years away, ARB Show will be returning in 2022 in an exciting new venue and format. This year, for the first time ever, we are proud to present ARB Show at APF 2022 taking place 22-24 September 2022 at the Ragley Estate in Warwickshire. The two largest arboricultural shows in the UK are teaming up to deliver an incredible event, with more than 20,000 people expected to attend over three days. Many favourite features of ARB Show will be included in the Arb Worker Zone and Tree Climbing Competition areas, and the ARB Show at APF area will populated with some of the most popular arboricultural industry exhibitors. Bringing the ARB Show to APF 2022 delivers an expanded offering for arborists at the show and helps the event reach beyond its traditional forestry base. We will be looking at how twin-line accessing and working can be applied in a practical way. The day will look at three areas, MRT (Moving rope technique), SRT (Single rope technique) and working on a pole. The MRT station will looking at access, change overs and moving around the canopy and work positioning. The SRT station looking at access, change overs and moving around the canopy and work positioning. The Pole station will be looking at moving up a pole and change-overs. This is the final guide in the suite of five technical guides, following the publication of TG1, TG2, TG4, and TG5 last year. The development of TG3 has involved many individuals in the industry and draws on the HSE-Commissioned ‘Rigging Research’ to provide an accessible, practical and technically informative guide to the planning and implementation of rigging techniques in tree work. The guide is very well illustrated with many drawings, photos, graphs and diagrams, to help managers, supervisors and arborists carry out safe and effective rigging and dismantling, working within calculated safe working parameters and peak load limits.
