  1. Any ideas on value of this saw I am selling? Approx 3-4 years old, as new condition standard 14" Stihl bar, 2 Stihl chains (one near enough new), tools, manual, chain cover etc. New unused 14" powersharp chain/bar jobbie. Just having a friendly argument reference value, I thought it would be worth in the region of £175 including the new chain kit, (value £45). Too much or about right?
  2. No idea..........anyone know for sure? I am taking it they are restictive?
  3. I ended up ordering a Makita 5121/45 promo for £332 inclusive of VAT and delivery, seemed too good a deal to pass up so it's winding it's way to me for Monday. Already have somebody mildly interested in the MS181, I'm guessing that'll sell easy enough.
  4. LTC, not really familiar enough with the pitfalls of secondhand saws so while I may well get a better spec' unit for similar/less money I'd rather go new.....knowing my luck I'd end up with a dog for some reason or another! I'll sell the MS181 with a new chain/bar plus originals and other a bits/pieces confident someone will be very happy with it as it's been well cared for, I appreciate what you're saying but have been stung too many times in the past.
  5. Mind more or less set on Makita/Dolmar 50cc with a 16" bar. Heart says Stihl, head says otherwise.......now at that finger poised on 'order' button stage.
  6. Thanks again all......just come in from logging up larger sections of that Ash ready for splitting, (I guess some of you pro's are fit as butchers dogs!? it's bloody hard work I find), the saw bogs down unless taking it steady so a little more oomph wouldn't go amiss to make less a job of it for sure, it just lacks that little bit of torque to complete cuts without fuss so gets a tad frustrating after a while.
  7. Well, from one 'noob' to another thanks for the input TW........to be honest I'd love a fast/powerful saw but know, for various reasons, I can't really warrant one let alone need one. I'm guessing some of the pro' saws used by many on here are a hoot to operate and at some point I'd like to try one out but I just need a step up from the MS181 for now. When my numbers come up and I buy that plot of land I've promised myself for the last few decades I'll upgrade but for now I have my sensible head on. I did have Stihl on my wish list but only because this little 181 has been faultless, if opinions on Makita/Dolmar are favourable (which appears the case) I will probably venture down this route.
  8. Guys, I won't ignore your advice and have read replies with interest........it's like I said, I am quite sure I could do with a little more power in a saw and originally asked if stepping up to a 50cc unit would offer a 'perceptible' difference. The 181 is ok but every now and then it feels a little breathless so, while realising a 60cc saw will almost certainly blast through anything I'll ever encounter with ease and would be good to use too, it's probably too much for my limited usage/needs....
  9. Ash approx 15-16", Leylandi at a guess 12"...been standing there many years. Reference usage, I had a call the other day to take down two sizeable apple trees, every now and then I get the chance of various and have nearly 3 tonne of larch slats (approx' 18" x 3") stored on pallets at a mates that need cutting in half to fit in the burner....I made up a frame and cut approx' 60 or so at a time, there are thousands of them per tonne or so it seems...a little more power wouldn't go amiss doing those, it gets boring after a while. The 181 will do it but it feels a little low on power at times.
  10. OK H.....will bear in mind if I go down that route, cheers.
  11. Edit: The Makita 6401 actually not that expensive (around £500), I misread the model/price I was looking at but still maybe too much saw for my needs.
  12. I like the look of the 261 but being honest the 271 might suit me just as well? Looking at Makita the 60cc saw seems quite expensive and maybe more saw than I need, what about the Makita 5121 as a viable alternative to the 261/271 should I go down the 50cc route? Still looking around at Echo etc. The Makita does seem like good value(£349 inc. delivered)......any input on this model?
  13. I appreciate that sentiment...not overly important to stick with Stihl, it was simply that this saw has been faultless. Will look into Makita...
  14. Thanks for the replies guys.....all much appreciated, I am taking notice. I do like the look of the 261
  15. However, afer reading up on here about these saws they are not without issues it seems?! (The 261CM that is......are there new/old versions of this saw)?
  16. I like the look of that, this is the sort of saw I had in mind....more power/response than the 181 without going too mad!
  17. Hi woodyguy........To most of you guys it might not be seriously heavy, but there is a 4ft length of Ash trunk on the ground just outside my shed where it fell and that is where it'll stay until I get help moving it, the weight of wood always amazes and surprises me..the 181 will cut it but it's asking a lot of it so I was hoping the slightly higher capacity saws a few rungs up the Stihl model range ladder would make it worth while........I'd hate to fork out money and be underwhelmed, on the flipside I don't think I need a massively powerful saw however nice the idea might be, and it is a nice idea, don't get me wrong. Ash aside there are 4 large Leylandi which need to come down in the coming weeks, again the 181 will do it I'm sure but with a bit of a struggle.
  18. Hi All, Hope you are all well..I wanted to join in order to (shamelessly) pick some of your noggins if I may? I use a Stihl MS181 that has served me well for approx 4 years, never missed a beat and always been a pleasure to start and use. It's primary use has been cutting logs to length but after taking down a large Ash at the bottom of our garden this last few days I now realise it's perhaps time to move on to a larger saw? I now have some seriously heavy lumber in the shed that no doubt the 181 can cope with but I'm thinking along the lines of selling (or px'g) for something with a little more guts. Would there be a perceptible difference in moving up to higher capacity saws such as the MS231/251 or would the next logical step be to go for something like the MS271 primarily as a logging saw? would I be wasting my time/money possibly? I'd like to stick with Stihl however I'm open to suggestions
