  1. don't remember how the tree looked it was in the corner of a field I don't get to much and when we got to it we did not look at it too much just thought about best way to get it off the field most of the tree is still on the grass strip we will go back to it sometime after Xmas when we are quiet
  2. Thanks guys I want to give this a go so I will put an order in with Rob D for a bar chain and sprocket next week some time I am not sure how this limb sat on the tree I have a gut feeling it it was possibly a forked trunk and went up but I don'
  3. Got it all finished and I have got something wrong the saw wont start at all So I poured some petrol on the filter and it ran a bit but wouldn't catch I noticed that the fuel pipe was slightly kinked so I played with that a load and think it's ok now bit still won't run It fires on the choke and then runs for a shirt time on fast idle but dies My thoughts are starved of fuel but I cannot work out why changing the mixture screws changes nothing So now if I choke it it starts a bit runs longer than it should I think for choke Then flick to fast idle and again runs for a few seconds and dies you can repeat this time and again and it just does the same Is it something that I have possibly got wrong with the carb build or do I need to keep investigating the fuel pipe
  4. Normally me and a friend just chop firewood for our own use this comes from the farm that we both work on over hanging branches falen trees bit of thinning it the wooded areas Any how we have a large oak that has come down in the corner of a field (think it was hit by lightning) and some of the limbs seem to be too good to just burn So came the idea of making something from it and the first thing I fancy is making a bar top for the water ski club that I am a member of and we are in the middle of a new clubhouse build My mate would also like a mantle for his house So this 1 limb that I brought back to the farm yard is about 2 foot wide And the straight part about 13 feet I need to make more than 13ft so I need 2 that I can flip to match the grain I would like to leave a natural edge 1 side and square it off the other Now I have jumped in a bit and bought a cheapo eco style mill from eBay it from the Scottish company that makes ramps Now I need a bar and chain the biggest saw we have is an 064 but it only has a 20" bar so that won't be big enough I was thinking about getting a 36" low pro bar and chain from Rob d along with the correct sprocket Is their anything else I have missed will the 064 be man enough basically any advise
  5. Managed another hour or so last night on the saw and its nearly back together When I stripped the carb the mesh filter was full of saw dust completely blocked how it ran I don't know Any how theory is now is its leaned out and either over reved causing it to fail or nipped a bit with the heat and the broken bit of ring has wiped out the retaining clip for the piston pin Sawdust has come from taking in unfiltered fuel due to fuel pipe split The other thing I have noticed is that it has more compression than before but that could change when it has run a bit Just waiting for an oil to bar pipe that did not come with the other bits then that side can go together and I can try it out
  6. I specifically ment the aftermarket pots not just general cause I did notice when I eyballed the 2 side by side the transfer ports were smaller on the farmertech pot but the inlet and exhaust looked less restrictive
  7. Bit of an update got the saw torn down First thing I found was a split fuel pipe in the tank near the filter so that could have been the cause of irratic running before and my vac pump arrived so I vac tested it really struggled with seal on the intake boot but when I got that sealed it held vac fine So I took the cylinder off and it all became apparent what had happened The wire lock on the clutch side had failed and the pin had slid to the side making a nice gouge in the cylinder the resulting bits of metal were mainly attached to the spark plug and melted around the combustion chamber surprisingly the piston was not too bad all considered but had some scoring on the exhaust side and the second ring land was damaged slightly The bottom end bearings felt fine so I flushed the crankcase out with brake cleaner and compressed air until it came clean and then ran some light oil in and turned it over to make sure everything had some lube for first start I decided to put the piston and cylinder on that I had bought its farmertech brand it may be rubbish but it is an easy enough swap if I decide to put a genuine one on in the future And thats it for now waiting for new pipes and everything before i get any further with it
  8. Just ordered a vac pump off eBay I have been after one for a while anyway so will vac test it looks easy enough Also ordered a tacho to tune with just incase my ear is rubbish Spud What causes the poor compression is it ring seal issues or poor combustion chamber shape and or port timing
  9. Thats why I am now asking questions I like to be prepared and do the job right In my car I have done quite a bit of engine work I spent 2 years collecting parts as they came up used or in sales etc and then did the upgrade over a few weekends in the garage I had a clear plan of what I wanted to do and what parts I needed and because of that it was an easy job that has delivered the performance I was after and more I am just trying to do the same with the saw but parts should be much easier to gather together
  10. It lost all power pretty quick and sounded rough all I have done so far is pop the exhaust off and look at the piston and its scored I put the saw away for a few months as I have been busy but should have some time to sort it now that'
  11. Thanks for the responses To answer a few questions No I dont think I got it right the first time better yes but was never truly happy I think I am not bad at chain sharpening and I keep up with it usually just tidy it up every couple of tanks of fuel I am not scared of engine work and will go as far as I need I am just not that familiar with small 2 strokes I am a hotroder so tuning and engine building is enjoyable to me but I am more used to big v8s The reason for failure I am not truly sure may be an air leak or maybe I tuned it lean to try get it to work How do I test the crankcase for leaks or should I just change the seals out anyhow
  12. Bringing this thread back from the past rather than starting a new thread So I eventually killed the saw Never managed to get the performance out of it that I think it should have had although I cut a lot of firewood with it I put it away and forgot about it for a while but it's time to make it great now So I have ordered a piston and cylinder and intend to put a carb kit in that I already have and new rubber hoses filters etc My gut feeling is that the saw went lean either my tune up trying to get a worn saw to run better than it could or a fault What's the likelihood of any thing else being needed what do I need to check And what can I do when I rebuild this to make sure I get top performance from it
  13. Cut a load of fire wood today it's a lot better not quite as powerful as I expected I borrowed my mates compression tester but was unable to get a reading due to the 1 way valve been faulty I will try and source another 1 I think I need to work on my chain sharpening technique it's sharp but not as good as I would like The setting I have settled with are not far from factory settings but what I have noticed is a slight drop in power slightly before it runs out of fuel previously with other stihl equipment I have used I have never noticed this they just go on till they die when the tank is empty
  14. Guess you were typing same time as me spud I took exhaust off and looked and there were no signs of scoring but the piston is polished different shades in lines that on first glance could be scoring I guess it where it passes the ports but is def not scored I put a cotton bud with the cotton removed in and slid it across the parts I couldn't touch with my little finger and it didn't jump or stop anywhere Then I took carb off and cleaned it and inspected it and the rest is in the thread above Need to get my file out and do a job on this chain now
  15. Right Had a play car settings were h 3/4 turn out l 1 turn out So I set it to factory 1 and 1 after cleaning the carb a bit It wouldn't idle so I turned l out about a quarter and still not happy but didn't bog when gassed so adjusted la a turn and it idles nice just comfortably bellow the clutch engagement point So hold trigger maybe 4 stroke but couldn't tell properly so out a bit and in a bit to get a good listen to the changes and out again till I was happy Went to make a cut in a big off cut of an oak beam I had in the back very dry and old cleaned up in the cut and I could push on the saw no bother wouldn't stall the chain It didn't cut fast but big chips and old dry oak think it's ok Another slice just for the sake of trying and I hit a screw I hadn't noticed bugger chain feels pretty blunt now so I think it's sorted but need to give the chain a seeing to and try in the normal wet logs at work
  16. Thanks guys A big part of me wants to make this saw good no agro on ebay and satisfaction of sorting it out I don't want a 181 good saw yes but as far as I understand not in the same league as the 026 if it were well I am fairly sure this isn't anything big as it starts well and ticks over good and has that nice crack to it it revs from idle but just runs out of power when you put it in the cut maybe it's not getting to full revs sounds a bit slow and it doesn't 4 stroke I will have a fiddle and do a compression test the Hold the start rope test checks out good but will get a proper compression tester from my mate
  17. The ms181 struggles with some bigger stuff we have hence why I wanted something larger I didnt want to go too big though and end up with a heavy saw Richard also has a 064 that's a beast in big stuff but he says it too heavy to use long I have never used it
  18. Been lurking around for a while trying to get an idea of what I wanted for cutting firewood also getting sucked in to the whole thing nearly finished spuds porting thread 3 night in and at page 70 Basically I can get wood from work for the log burner (farm) it comes from raising canopies around fields and trees that blow over or need felling for another reason This wood is shared with some one else at work and that's no problem as there is plenty now I feel like am tied to the other guy a bit much as I don't have a saw so can't go in on a Saturday and chop a pile up unless it pre arranged so I need a saw Research led me to think for what I need stihl 026 ms260 Scoured eBay and ending up with a 99 026 that's tidy enough described as working as it should it came with a good very little wear 16" bar and chain Now the down side it starts fine and sounds ok but has no power at all I was expecting it to eat compared to Richards ms181 that I am used to using but I am rather disappointed it would not be able to cut anything at full bar even 8" stuff you need to be gentle the 181 makes it look daft So what would you do I am £155 in would you try mend what could be a great saw or get the seller to take it back and find another
