  1. Well thats the racing sorted, got it running but still not perfect and now it won't start again. For half an hour there I felt like a chainsaw god:001_smile: back to the start tomorrow
  2. New service kit in the carb and it runs:001_smile: It took me a couple of goes, the diaphragm looked like it fitted the other way round, the problem now is it starts, then races right up to full power and stays there. I started with about 1.5 turns out on the h and L screws and about 2 on the tickover one, anybody kind enough to run me through setting the carb, and anything I might have done wrong?
  3. Few good tips there, ta. I put new gaskets on the manifold so i'll check the holes are in the right place, and check the fuel line and filter and get some new diaphragms in the carb. I'll let you know how I get on, Thanks again:001_smile:
  4. More questions:001_smile: Saw reassembled and the spark looks good to my untrained eye, although it was a bit intermittent till I took the kill lead off. No sign of it even thinking of starting tho, so took the plug out and it wasnt wet- pulled off the fuel line and no fuel evident- does the carb suck the fuel or is there some kind of pump ive not seen? I suppose a new set of gaskets and diaphrams in the carb is the next step? Then a new ignition module but the only ones ive found are about sixty quid so i'm unwilling to just get one on spec, where could I get a pattern part- or the ungoverned one mentioned earlier? Sorry this is a bit rambling and thanks for the help
  5. The HT wire is out of the coil, i'll try screwing it in. How would I check the coil can spark across 5-8mm (imagine you are talking to a complete idiot:001_smile:) while I am here can anyone hazard a guess as to the age of the saw- serial no 0450697, black tag, Im guessing 1990 Also Stubby- tell me more
  6. Success! thanks to the advice on here the clutch is off, the brass pinion looks ok but the oilpump is pretty stuck. Got a used one off ebay ready to put on. I think the next thing to look at is the ignition module, the wire pulls out, should it do that? Anyone know where I might get one, used or decent copy would be fine.
  7. Yep, I know I'd probably do better with something new, but Ive torn the arse out of that saw for years and I like it. I'll set about a socket with the grinder and see how I get on:001_smile:
  8. thread resurrection! this went on the back burner as I got nowhere, however I now have a woodburner again so I'm having another crack at it. Having a hell of a job getting the clutch off, just grind the end of the socket flat you say? Wont start now so carbs off to be cleaned, given it a good spray with carb cleaner and will put new gaskets on, will also bung a new spark plug in. the coil(?) lead comes out at the module, is it a push in or do I need a new one? Anything else I need to look at? Thanks for the help, my other option is get a 435 but I reckon this will be a better saw if I can get it going and cash is a bit tight right now
  9. Thanks for the input on this, easy next step seems to be the petrol in the oil tank ruse, nice idea. After that ill get the clutch off and have a nose around:001_smile:
  10. home firewood processor here. Ive had a 262xp for nearly 20 years and generally treated it like a dog, using old veg oil as chain lube and never cleaning it. Recently the oil stopped coming through to oil the chain, ive cleaned the hole out and soaked the tank with petrol but no joy. Any other suggestions? If it needs a new oil pump is it a hell of a job, and does anyone have a recommendation of where i might get the parts? I looked at a cheap new husky, but i'd rather restore this as its been a great saw. Ive also got a 266xp, would I be able to cannibalise this for parts? I got it cheap and i don't think its totally original. Thanks for any help you can give
