Forestry is good but hard work and poorly paid price per ton is low as can't compete with machines that can do twelve times what one man can do in a day. Worked on price per ton before lots of traveling and long days for little money and you don't get paid till timber has left site then you have to wait 30 days last time I worked on price per ton didn't get paid for 3 months. So whilst it is very enjoyable the money is just not there in my experience
This is exactly why I don't cut full time anymore I have been waiting near enough 6 months for some payments! The last place I worked full time was brilliant but other machine operator's undercutting and doing it for next to nothing led to a loss of work! I now work part time as a support worker in my local college and cut on my days off! I have a regular income now and love getting back out in the woods! Back to the old when you have sawdust in your blood you can't get it out!

Went yesterday was a fantastic day took my grandad he really enjoyed it too. The only problem is the people on the stalls are good at making you spend money 😀 it's the British stihl timber sports championships today! Have a good one folks!

No experience of the Great Wall's other than there's more and more of them appearing round us.
Hi Chris same around here they seem to be coming more popular that's why I was curious about them and main dealer is only about 10 mins from my spot.

Evening all. Im starting to look for a new pick up, im a suby cutter don't do much towing, just throw saw and tools in back and go. Need 4wd to get me out off the sh!t and save a bit of a treck sometimes dont need a proper off roader. Does anyone own or have any experience of the great walls, good/bad? Ive notice that they have brought out the new tracker version. Im only a young driver and they come into a low insurance group which looks a bit of a plus already. Cheers in advance jim.

Martin seemed like a very nice chap I only met him briefly. Very sad news and a very sad loss to the arb community and his family! This incident happened only 2 miles or so from my house. I have heard of a few close shaves around my way recently STAY SAFE people!!!

I have one there are a few good ones threads on here about them. Mine has no back seats and is boarded out. 2" lift kit and big muds on you wouldn't want to go on a long distance trip in it. I've got manual hubs on it as the vacuum ones can be unreliable and if your going off road/in woods the transmission supports want upgrading to heavy duty as the ally ones can snap. It's a good off road cheap to run/fix fun truck! KAP motor sports do good jimny's. Jim

I have a jimny which is a van no seats in the back and all boarded out in the back. It also has lift kit and big muds on it as well ideal forestry vehicle for me! 👍

Yes jon. I was out felling a rather large dead oak branch fell out of the tree behind me knocked me out fractured my collar bone off work for 6 weeks the I took the helmet to A&E the dr said I was lucky to be wearing it saved me. Bust the harness inside and cracked the shell, some force hit it.

Have a look at tkf training I'm sure they used to have loads off info on what grants you could get for cs courses they are based in Holmfirth but if you can get the info off them you could be on to something.

I was in your situation when I was in college, when I left I got a job in tree surgery to gain some experience in the job, experience and learning curves and learning from the experienced is very important in any sector of the tree industry! After doing quite a bit of climbing and site clearance I figured I didnt enjoy climbing but loved loved cutting. I then got in touch with my local forestry contractors and I am now working full time as a self employed cutter for them and love my job! As for firewood its just beer money for me at the moment . So if I was you I would go out get some experience discover which type of work suites you then put your money into a business you will enjoy running. there's nothing worse than hating what you are doing and not wanting to get up in the morning. Thats my opinion any way. Cheers Jim

My first boss I worked for used to say to the customers before the job it's £60 for me to do the tpo app if I get the job I'll nock it off the final price if not you pay the £60 or do the app yourself. This seemed to work perfectly well for him.
