Thanks for letting me know, the post is taking a bit longer due to last weeks weather.
    Happy turning.[emoji106]
  2. Hi Mark, posted these for you this morning, 1st class Royal Mail, so you should get them tomoz.
They are fairly sharp at the moment, I use a bench grinder with a green wheel & then a wet stone to sharpen but an ordinary grinding wheel will suffice.
Or you could go old school & use a flat stone (not one you find in your garden) which I do on occasions.
    Happy turning.
P.s. It can be very addictive.

  3. Nice one Darren.

I trust the missus, the dogs and yourself are well mate.

I was working in telecoms and decided to get out as soon as possible. I left to work as a snowboard guide in 2000. Did a couple of winters living in The alps. On my second season I had ditched the work malarkey and was having fun. One of the guys I lived with was a tree surgeon. We kept in touch. When I was back in the UK I decided to give it a go. Contacted my mate, did a bit. Contacted a few others and did a bit whilst at college.

    Been at it ever since.

Hello mate, I hope you and yours are well.

We are not bad, we lost the big fella back in October, so just the two dogs now.

  4. I was made redundant after 15 odd years in a sweaty factory manufacturing boxes & part of the redundancy deal was retraining, so I became a road traffic accident investigator, did that for a couple of years when I was diagnosed with the cancer, got made redundant again while under going treatment, got the all clear 18 months later and felt ready to take on part time work, a friend of a friend who knew this bloke was starting up his own tree surgery business was looking for a hand, so I started with him on one day a week & within a couple of months I was working full time for him, fell in love with the work & he offered to pay for me to go to Merritt wood but I declined and payed for the RFS myself as I didn't want to be tied financially to him in case the big c came back.

I spent around 3 years with him, learnt loads from him and the subbies he got in, I started getting the odd job from neighbours & relatives so decided to give it a go on my own.

8 years on I now look after three private estates, one commercial site and I fit domestic tree work in between.

  5. Like many animals, dogs will self medicate which is called zoopharmagognosy by utilising natural remedies to treat various problems like digestive, aches, pains etc.

For instance a dog will eat grass (they are quite particular on grass type) to induce a gag reflex enabling them to evacuate their stomach of excess acid.

As you know tree bark contains various substances like tannins, lignin, polysaccharides like cellulose & through years of evolution the domestic dog has learnt which substances it needs to treat various ailments.

Sometimes they self medicate as a preventative measure.

Dogs are very quick to habit form if not corrected in the right way and my thinking is that due to the volume of damage you are experiencing on the Heath there is either a number of sickly dogs or one has formed a bark habit.

The other thought that has crossed my mind is that the dog has not been initially successful finding what it needs so is trying other trees.

My suggestion would be to install several wildlife cameras to the trees that have the most damage as there is obviously something in the bark the dog likes or needs.

Most dog owners walk their dogs at the same time and place most of the time.

    I hope this helps.

  6. Signed by me & mine.

We have a small connection with Bedgelert, around 7 years ago we entered into negotiations to purchase the convenient store, so was able to look at the finances and 80% of the turnover was generated by tourism so a development like this would destroy the local businesses which the residents also rely on.

We didn't buy it in the end as half way through the process the owner changed his mind.

This is one place that should be left well alone by development.
