  1. looking at stihl 103/133 at £600+

is there a cheaper alternative thats any good and I can get  spares for it when needed

and would it be better to get the 36cc or25cc  , I would want the telescopic though

I only use it for one or two days a year approximately

have been looking at the second hand market but not found anything yet

    thanks in advance

  2. I have a ms 391 and the spark has gone , I diagnose it as the coil having given up , seems I can only get an original part from Germany at £52 .

    90 odd here ,

but there is a ms361 part that looks identical (£14) , my question is has anyone fitted the 361 part on a 391

    otherwise its been reliable

  3. Best thing you can do to make your saw last longer is leave it standard and take care of it. If you want the saw to cut faster my advice would be to focus on your sharpening more than anything.

well that was the first thing I did today was to find my sharpener that sits on the saw and you can set all the correct angles to get it right , but I do agree corect sharpening is the most important thing

  4. Would the husky not be better to port out?

I've tried porting once and it went wrong so I'm waiting for a knackerd saw to come along so I can try again.

You can post the saw to spud with not much trouble.

Porting is more complicated than it looks.

If the old stihl is not very powerfull but a old have you tried a service on it and cleaning out the exhaust. Just a simple clean out can make the gasses run more freely without going to the trouble of porting it out.

You say near kent. Just where abouts in kent are you? I'm not going to offer to port it for you as I will admit its not my strong point.

Have you comp tested the stihl. May be low in comp causing it not to run as powerfull as it should. It is old after all.

Hi the stihl is 1 year old not had a lot of use by the look of it

I have a compression tester and will try to see if it fits

    Im near Sevenoaks

  5. Hi everyone , my first post

just to start Im a Farmer , grow and retail xmastrees and still learning about that job too after 22years of trees

I'm after chainsaw advice mostly, good or bad I have bought a ms391 secondhand one year old thinking of getting it ported, enough to improve it

but not enough to shorten its normal life, thought I might do it myself but the more I read the more complicated it gets , cost is a concern and I would want a solid result no overheating etc , is it possible to do a simple job myself just to improve the saw ?

read also that 32/1 makes a saw last longer than 50/1 oil ratio is it true!

I heat my home with log burners and use the saws mainly for that , just incase your wondering why I use a 391, my favourite saw is a Husqvarna 385xp it just cuts so fast its a pleasure to use

probably I need to speak to spud but is there anyone nearer to kent who is good at porting

    any advice would be helpful

    Kieron
