  1. The rack is off the shelf and £196. it's the pinion that is dear. in plain its £195 but £395 for Nitride hardend teeth. I've read on a few american forums of shafts twisting and shearing off if they are not hardend. It would be much cheaper to buy just a pinion to mount on a shaft (about £30) but the largest bore shaft would be 25mm and i think it wouldn't last long especially after it's had a keyway cut in it. I'm trying to see if i can get some of the key bits from the uk DR power importer at a better price. Bloody Brussels!!
  2. um rack and pinion in hardend steel 595 quid. I have everything else i need kicking around pretty much but it won't be cheap splitter. A grand i'd think. There are some youtube clips splitting oak ect. that baler is asking for trouble and with my track record a definate no no.
  3. there are plenty of flywheels about and much more balanced than some of the above. i'm using 2 rollers out of a old roller mill for cattle feed. came with bearings and shafts for next to nowt.
  4. just gathering the bits to make one as they are not available over here due to not being ce marked. Got my flywheels and engine. Trying to get a good price on the rack and pinion. The other one similar is the DR Rapidfire. Here is a good clip of a home made one but maybe a little over complicated? 5. to do that it must have once been solid fuel. you can't convert a standard oil rayburn to solid fuel. it is a door missing for a start. shame os i'd be delighted if i could.
  6. Hi John. you are right if it is wood only and buy/have installed by a approved fitter you can have the vat at 5%. we would like the option of using some coal if the need ever arises hence the 355sfw over the 345w which is wood only. the vat doesn't worry me, because of course it will be warming the water for milk to feed the calves won't it. hence the vat reclaim!! It will actually make it less than £3k. apart from keeping us warmer it should save some leccy too i hope.
  7. we have a 15 year old bungalow which is insulated well and have 8 rads in total although we only want to run 5 in the bedrooms and bathroom which are the other end from the kitchen where the rayburn will be and lounge where our villager woodburner is. so hopefully it should be fine. we have a oil boiler which we will leave in as a back up, as like the oil rayburn is it's pretty much worthless. I just dispise buying oil these days and haven't used the rayburn or central heating for 4 months in the last 2 years. skinflint going to put in a 300l thermal store to link the two up.
  8. thanks. looked at most of them. little concerned about getting what you pay for from some of the cheaper stoves and not having the metal in them. I'd kind of got down to the rayburn or stanley donard 60. now they are about the same price thinking the rayburn will hold it's value best and i can get plenty of spares easily/cheaply. going by a few nice ones sold on flea bay recently i think new is looking very attractive. because it's a farmhouse/office will claim at least some vat back.
  9. Just about to take the plunge and change our oil rayburn for a heatranger 355 sfw, as we have a huge pile of wood from some countryside stewardship work. I've been shopping around and haggling and i've got it down to £3575 inc vat and delivery with a £500 off nfu voucher. Anyone bought one cheaper or got a better alternative? this poor farmer doesn't want to spend more than he's got to.
