  1. It's less about height and more about isolating limbs.

Because you're not looking for a nice crotch to run the rope over cleanly you can throw your line from outside the canopy as high as you can, tie it off and up you go.

I've done very little with it thus far, but in terms of the potential it has to save time, even just to get high and set the Pulleysaver to work ddrt which can be done so much more quickly, I'm sold!

Ok i think i see now. Thanks for advice. just had a look around and found this on climbing arborist Advanced climbing techniques | Setting up a false crotch system

I like the look of that system. Ill give it a go me thinks!

Has anyone tried/use this system? good/bad..?

  2. Aeris is no easier to bundle than XTC, throw line is the answer.

    Have you thought about SRT....?

No thats true but Aeris is much lighter and I thought may be that would make it easier to throw? I guess either way a throwline is the answer :sneaky2:

I havent done anything with SRT, was looking into it but for the minuet, with the kit I have got, im bundling through with DRT. How does using SRT make reaching high enough anchoring points help?

    Thanks for advice :thumbup1:

  3. Hi Mate,

I quite often use a Black Widow style catapult to get a throw line into place by attaching it to a fishing weight weighing about 1 or 2 ounces (usually a drilled bullet shape). I'm lucky that I can practise in my garden on a varied selection of trees but it enables me to reach up to the 70 feet mark with consistent accuracy.

The catapults are around £8 to £10 each too so are a cheaper option than the other models that are ridiculous money unless your regularly working on very tall trees.

    Hope this helps,

    all the best,

    Jamie :001_smile:

    Hi Jamie,

are they hand held ones or with the additional stand? i dont mind getting one for that kinda money. was just uber reluctant to shell out 150 odd quid for one (that would get me a CE lanyard kit...)

I was climbing some pretty complex (lots of branches..) trees on the weekend and got frustrated as was near impossible to get a good line up from the ground.

I only had my 13 mm XTC rope with me which made throwing it even harder!! Might give it a go with the Aeris 11mm before i get a throwline kit.

I would rather be able to throw my main line well than have to lug more kit around on rec climbs!!!!!

  4. Another risk to having a biner on the end of your advancing line and this from personel experiance is if u throw and cant see any tight crotch or stubs left u can get it stuck and if thatd your main line you have thrown your now stuck on your short line then panik sets in lol

 Yer thats a good point.

Just set up my 5m lanyard so I will use that for anchor progression and then just anchor my main line in with a cambium as high as possible. :thumbup1:

  5. You either need a second system (other end of ur line) or a short side strop for your side d's.the short strop could also be transferred to the bridge of your harness to get better work positioning.

When you throw ur line to a branch advance as far as you can then take your second system and throw too a higher branch and advance the tree that way.

Note- always test the anchor with your whole weight befor disconnecting the other,if using a strop from side d's.never hang from them, always be stood on a branch or crotch so that ur full weight is not on ur kidneys.

    Jake:thumbup1:

Cheers Lumber Jake. I will give that a go. (you make it sound easy) :sneaky2:

when throwing to the second anchor point Is it alright to throw the climbing line with a biner on it? or will this damage the biner??

Does anyone use a catapult?? didnt realise they were so spenny...so want to hear some feedback before I buy.

    Thanks again Lumber Jake

  6. Hi lads, hope your all having a good week end!

I had my new tree motion out today for the first time...great bit of kit. had a few problems with setting the line. I havent got a throwline or weights, i just use small garden rope with a weight or just my climbing line and a D shackle.

I can get a good anchor point with this system but am struggling to get it high enoguh to be able to cover and practise the whole tree.

Today was mainly to try out the new harness but i want to spend less time setting line and more time climbing. I am also desperate to be able to get a high enough anchor point so I can get high enough up.

Are there any tips (apart from getting a throwline etc) on getting a good anchor point?

is this just something practise will cure or are there some tips on using a throwline?

    Cheers in advance

  7. Did one earlier in the year on Madingley Rd and a lot of work around that time in he Colleges along Grange Road.

Yer thought it was you lot.

remember seeing those two huge...(what where they) being taken down by the hedge line. I live around there so like to keep an eye on whats going on

  8. Theres a belt of trees that run between Bar Hill and Dry Dryton. Some nice learner trees in there. It's used a bit by dog walkers but we shouldn't get disturbed.

    Yes, pre-ordered the zigzag.

I mail order if I need thing quick, mostly from FR Jones.

The closest drives to see before you buy are either Landmark Trading or BTS.

Nice one cheers, ill go and have a look around tomrrow, is the belt along saxon way?

  9. All these people around Cambridge and I never knew.

If we can't find some nice biggies, theres some half decent Oaks very close to me that I practiced in when starting off.

I'd probably be looking at early March - MAY have warmed a bit by ten.

I may have had some time on the zigzag by then.

    A quiet bunch we are!

Any places good for starting out would be awesome. need to get practising!

are there many good spots around here? im south cambs as well so should know the areas you are talking about...i SHOULD...

Have you pre ordered it then?

Another question..do you have a trusty supplier around here or just internet?

  10. Right click on your image where its hosted, select view image in new tab or window. Copy the entire address of the image. Then post on here and select the Image icon (its yellow and looks like two mountains with a sun) and paste the link. Submit and hey presto your hosted image is shown here

Thanks for that, think i got the hang of it now. :thumbup1:

  11. Oak oracle who do you work for I'm in Sawtry half hour away from bar hill

Hi Dayton Tree Care, no one at the moment. Got a crap office job at the :sneaky2:. Am looking to start up this time next year with a bloke who is freelancing atm.

Im just getting into climbing seeing whats it all about. where abouts do you climb around here?

  12. Sup Oracle, Im based in south cambs and Im looking to link up with people for a rec climb as well, weather is just a bit too horrible for my liking at the moment!

Have you got any idea of where you want to hit up?

Do you have your own gear as well?

alright, yer would be keen for that. supposed to snow tonight apparently. Was gonna go out for a butchers tomorrow and have a look around for good spots. Where do you normally go?

Yer got most of the kit, all the gear and no idea springs to mind.....:blushing::biggrin:

  13. So the ring is used if you want to use the lanyard as a single line so you can use the full length?

You can then attached another another one for a 3:1 pulley system (great if your knakerd)

Good to know how to set it up for rescues and other things!

  14. I watched in utter disbelief as a bloke use his brand new imori rope to pull a chipper out of a tight spot!:scared: The rope was butchered except for the spliced end which had been tucked away so i salvaged it and it is now what i call my "Sports strop" i love it.. Simple and visible :001_smile:

is that the 8mm Beal accessory cord?

Just got some by mistake....:blushing: and was not sure what it was suitable for as its "dynamic" rope suggested for fall arrest etc ?

    ?any help appreciated!

  15. As said Duxford H&S is the only place close to Cambridge but they don't have much on display.

Landmark Trading at Stamford is alright but to see it all, either a trip to FR Jones or wait for the trade shows to start.

Chilli, I guess from SG8 that your somewhere near Royston.

Where abouts are you Oak Oracle?

    I'm at Bar Hill.

A Cambs rec climb will have to be sorted soon.

Thanks for input. I spoke with a guy from Duxford H&S, very helpful but quoted me best part of 400£ for the new Kolibri harness....

Im central cambridge, so close to both Chilli and you.

defiantly keen for that, Im very new to climbing so it would be great to get some advice and see how the pros do it!!!

  16. ah ok. thank you reddog. now that you say that, i do notice i have to still pull the slack through, although its a lot easier. i choose this prusik hitch because i am new, and that is the only one im farmiliar with. i will look into the VT and the klemheist. thank you very much

Even Better...Arb Talk Knot Guide app, great on the move....or up a tree :001_tongue:

There are so many types of different friction hitches, using different types of cordage, rope etc. Give them all/as many as you can its fun as well as beneficial to you knowing as many as possible.

I was using viper 8mm prussik (endless) 4/6 rap for a while, was reluctant to change as I knew and felt comfortable with it. I was convinced to try others out (as i am trying to do here) and its made such a difference. I know climb with a variety of hitches for different applications.

Let us know how you get on and what you decide on, pictures of your set up would be cool!

  17. Morning all!

Anyone know of some good equipment suppliers around/in/within 30 miles of cambridge?? I have searched and searched, found one in Norfolk but wondered if there are any closer?

(boring thread I know but im desperate to find somewhere I can go play with new kit and convince my self I need it!!)

  18. Its very hard to give a 100% diagnosis and prognosis from a few blurry photographs, we can only offer advice on past instances and what books may say. If your really concerned, maybe ask someone on here local to you, to come and have a look first hand:biggrin:

On the case! thanks for all the comments, very helpful! have a good week end

  19. It looks more than bud proliferation to me. I can't see properly from the picture but the cambiun appears necrotic in the second pic and I'm not sure if the white patch is snow or mycelium?

Unfortunately not its a type of fungi,, i assume. I did check that as i wondered if that question may come up.

Like you say the cambium is defiantly rot and it seems to of been that way for a while. it falls away at the slightest touch.

What are you thoughts on its life span past this stage? Removal? I am slightly concerned about where the house is in relation to it.

    Cheers for your comments.
