Yes. Criminal. A few beers is more than a couple. And you can kill somebody on 1 metre of road, let alone 100m or 100km.
I think you knowingly posted that scenario with the intention of sparking this debate, or if not you should know better. So don't get indignant and act the injured party when the replies aren't what you expected.
Bit like saying "I hit this bloke with my landy, can anyone help me with where to get a new bumper?"
Thats why i said a few not two! Maybe i wasnt specific enough for you, I live out in the arse end of knowhere down a dead quite country lane, the most i would have killed is a little bunny which i run over all the time anyway to feed to the dog.
To say that i intended to spark this debate is completely absurd! I asked a simple question and as i explained to steve, thought id set the scence and make it a bit more interesting for anyone who was kind enough to give me some advice. If id known it was going to cause this much polava i really wouldnt have bothered. Ive got much better things to do with my time than sit on my arse kicking off debates about whatever you think im doing, that would just be sad, hence why i only come on here to get advice. Im not the one trolling through peoples posts adding unneeded spiteful comments remember.
Yes, possibly slightly indignant as im a grown man and dont need to be lectured on the laws of the land or whats right and wrong but acting the injured party?! Whats that all about then? Ive taken the time to thank the people who advised me, put others in their place for any unkind remarks and explained the situation better to anyone who has speculated otherwise.
'I hit this bloke with my landy, can anyone help me with where to get a new bumper?
Im not even going to comment on this - i actually laughed out loud, how is this even comparable.. Theres no question mark there as its rhetorical, i dont even care.
Why am i even justifying myself to you
-
My mistake. I didn't realise "I'd had a few" means you are sober.
Probably a regional thing then.
I didn't say you were driving. My interpretation of "a few" is three or more. Three pints put you over the limit for driving. Caught driving at that limit and you get done for drunk driving.
Three pints and you are drunk as far as the law and driving are concerned.
If you want to impress the folk at the manor don't turn up smelling of drink or with a hangover.
This is good advice, as is not using a saw after drinking. If you want to do otherwise you crack on, just be careful. I wouldn't want to hear you had hurt yourself.
I greatly appreciate the advice, dont get me wrong! And yes, your interpretation was correct but there is a big difference between having a few which might make you merry, and being drunk. A person can be charged for drink driving even if theyve had 2 pints depending on your tollerance and other factors yet that wouldnt make them drunk. Thats why its called drink driving, not drunk driving.
Oxford Dictionary for drunk...
adjective
[predic.]
affected by alcohol to the extent of losing control of one’s faculties or behaviour:
I impressed them by turning up at such short notice, clearing the drive and explaining that I would be back first thing in the morning to finish off. They knew the score.

I manage to get enough work to be able to afford chainsaw trousers working normal hours whilst sober thanks
As do i but i dont turn down work when i know im capable of doing it. Theyre boots not trousers.

The past few weeks weather has been extreme, but we,ve most of the storm work complete now. It's been good challenging work, an interesting start to the year.
Good stuff! Stay safe and have a grand weekend..
Im off down the pub
-
Im with you on this. I wouldn't go sticking silly high call out prices on a simple small job, if it was me and in my local village id prob just do it at normal rates might add abit extra on for getting socked and dragging me out off the warm.
Too right if it was a regular local client/ neighbour but they dont usually use me and the only reason I was offered the job is because the other guy is away, so why not charge for the callout?!
-
If it was too fell a 100ft Sitka beside a house in the storm, I'd happily charge £500 for an hours work, if there is risk and skill involved, it takes years to learn such tasks.
As for a job that took 2 drunk guys 45 mins
Theres that word again
-
The thing that I can never understand about these threads is that the very first thing I do when arriving at a private call out is agree the price.
I'm not cheap, but think I'm fair, I have no idea what the customers expecting it to cost, so I give them a price, they can then take it or leave it. They can't start arguing once the job is finished and they know your not just trying it on, because you gave them the choice to accept the price or not.
I agree completely too. In this situation however my missus took the call and relayed the message on to me. From what I was told, they wanted the job done there and then. I know this is obviously crying out to be a 'winner' but theyre neighbours of mine and i know them well. Im sure they were just as confident as i was in knowing that i wouldnt rip them off. Hence why i thought id ask you lot and get an idea of what an emergency callout SHOULD cost for last night and the future.

Just out of curiosity do you have a standard minimum fee for normal hours tree work. This would be my starting point. Then perhaps an out of hours premium, but I think you have to be realistic. So you normal rate for the clear up and perhaps your minimum charge plus an out of hours rate. Maybe plus 50%, because if you need staff to get involved it will have to be worth there while. Or you have an arrangement with another company do cover out of hours work.
Hey, thanks for the advice buddy. I try to steer clear of hourly rates but i do have a regular call out fee and then other random prices depending on how long the job will take/ the amount of waste to clear etc!
How are you getting on with the weather over in Ireland?!
-
HI MATE can i just say one thing it up to if you take it on or not BUT would not of been better to put this in the member only forum as the chap from large house may see this BUT thats up to you what you do mate thanks jon
Thanks for the advice bud but i didnt realise there was such a thing. The likelihood of that is very slim but im not too fussed if they were to read this - Theyd probably be happy to see that i was doing some research on what i should charge them.
-
......so how many sizes of Manor House are there?
They vary quite considerably smart arse.
-
Am I totally under estimating jobs here? £400 for a 45 minute job?? Is that not a bit steep...I would charge £250 for that call out, but my guidelines would be that price is to come to site, make the tree safe and waste would be left on site...you then give a price if they want the job cleaned up and if you have to go back the following day...then you charge what ever you normally do eg day rate, half say, hourly rate....
Am I totally off the mark?
The way this thread is going please be gentle with me 😉 👍
-
calc what your team costs are , what profit you want & thats your price.. simples
-
Sounds like a £100 job to me, your circumstances at the time should not effect what you charge on a very simple small job.
It would be the same as charging double because its your birthday
Thats ridiculous. Youd charge the same for a night time callout as you would a regular job?
You would expect to pay a plummer the same price for a regular job as you would do a callout for a leak in the middle of the night, why should it be any different for an Arborist?
I work the hours I do and anything outside of that is going to cost extra. I have a life other than trees.
-
Nonsense. Treequips response to this is bang on. Some things you simply don't write on the internet...the opening part of the OP is one.
wont bother next time

Reality check
This thread was only ever going to go this way.
The controversial element far "out interests" all else.
It might as well read, I was pissed up in the pub and me and my drunk mate went on a call out, I am still a bit pissed but I am going to finish the job this morning, how much can I charge?
Interests wernt the point. If id asked for an opinion on drink driving i wouldnt be on this forum. I stated the facts, you made the assumptions.
quote 'It might as well read,I was pissed up in the pub and me and my drunk mate went on a call out, I am still a bit pissed but I am going to finish the job this morning, how much can I charge?'
Not my style bud, my first post was elaborate for a reason. Reading that just made me cringe.
-
We'll done fellas you have derailed another thread. How many times has someone asked a simple question then people have misread it ie; drink driving, 4 pints of what exactly? He hasn't asked you to be Poirot he asked how much would you charge! If more of you answered some of these questions without pomp and presumptions maybe we wouldn't have to trawl through 90 pages of bravado before we get back on topic to what usually starts as a good post.
Have some emoticons
Well said, I get fed up with trolling through unrelated waffle.
-
At which point you will have a client that expects you to continue working on "keen" prices.
Put in the going rate and impress them with the service, bit hard to do that when you and your mate roll up stinking of beer or badly hung over though:blushing:
Funny that cause when i saw her today i made a cheeky joke about her dragging me out of the pub to clear her drive. She was over the moon that id made the effort and we even got a tip.
And what are all of these 'stinking of beer' comments, cant you men drink properly?
-
Why?
Don't you think that's underhand and therefore dishonest trading.
Doing an excellent job at a fair honest price is what wins me repeat work not putting in a cheap price to make others look expensive
Too right! Website aside, I only work through recommendations.
Work in the Alps
in Employment
Posted
Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone knows of any work in or around the Alps starting ASAP. I have my Hilux, all of my climbing gear and my 200T with me. I am an experienced climber but would prefer ground work initially as im slightly out of shape after being a snowboard bum for the last 5 months!
Any leads welcome and thankyou...
