Thought this was an interesting article from Germaine Greer in The Telegraph -- Worth a look.

These are the most satisfying jobs -- The garden's transformed.
Fair play, mate.

This probably worth a new thread, but Sandy related.
Oh My God ...

It hurt just watching that. That was a kamikaze maneuver ...

Right answer Charlie A deed of convenant is attached to the property and land. Once again it is a case of ignorance is no defence in law. A covenant is passed from owner to successive owner to protect in this case the trees. Let the client sort this out with his solicitor, its beyond your remit and tbh more than the job is probably worth in hassle. i checked this with a solicitor while discussing a planning issue, so I think its pretty sound advice.
That has to be the bottom line. Not only are we supposed to be surgeon's but legally savvy too. In the event of any confusion always cover yourself.

Good job!! We're trying to do more fencing at the moment too.

What's wrong with spending the last hour logging. A good end to the day IMO. Plus you can get a nice cuppa aswell. Beats slogging guts out to get a job finished in the dark.
No, I'd agree. Good way to end the day.
Too dry and too light are 1's we've heard alot. It's not the most profitable way to spend our time, so we don't re-service 'high maintenance' customers.

Congratulations Chris -- That's looking great out there.

I was round my friends quoting a reduction job and my friends mother told me of an old technique used to try help infected trees they said they had a bbq ounce just under there tree which was highly infected with white fungi and they didnt mean to do it but the tree got back to health anybody else heard of this
That's a new one on me Arb Man Sam. This could purely anecdotal, but if you ever try it, let me know. I'd be curious to know the result

Second hand van, three saws(one is always being fixed), blower, climbing kit, rescue kit, hedge cutters, pick, mattock, fork shovel, wheel barrow, axe. Somewhere to keep it all safe and store waste to be processed into compost, logs etc (waste is work on the quiet days). insurance. Some good friends. More energy than you think you would ever had. Honest, decent, approachable manner. Quals &certs. Be willing to learn, you'll never know it all!
Our business was started with an escort eclipse, a hand me down climbing harness and one saw that had seen better days. We just worked hard, did a good job and cleaned up after ourselves. And I thank every customer that gave us the benefit of he doubt. Never ever turn down work, that bit of digging might lead to a tpo'd veteranisation that impresses the tree officer
That's great advice Ginja. The basics endure. From the outset you to need to balance the books and remember your primary marketing tool is word of mouth recommendations.
Develop relationships with experienced peers. Lastly, don't forget your online presence. That's increasingly important in the post Yellow Pages climate.

Me too!
Love Christmas. Already loosening my belt and stuffing my face with mince pies.

Just looking through Tim's gallery now -- The mans a Master.

I've just seen this event -- Shame we missed it. Axe throwing competitions, tug-of-war and Arb master classes? Sounds great.
I'll keep an eye out for times and dates next year.

That's an amazing video and music's perfect. That's not just a tree -- It's more like a mountain.

Awesome footage with the head cam there. Makes you feel like you're up the tree with them

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I'll get my coat:)
Ha ha, why not? Sounds like an adventure.
-
Good to hear Chris. Good luck with everything
-
Really, really cool. Congratulations mate.

looking at the devastation, is there a calling for UK tree surgeons?
Just a thought for the future.
In every crisis there's an opportunity right?
I've been watching these home video's of trees falling after the event -- Amazing and frightening.
-
I have to say, those sculptures are bloody scary.
Those artists are incredible -- Well worth watching.
