  1. The place I was going to get my saw from has now put all of their prices up by a fair chunk. so I am hoping to find somewhere else to get one from. I've seen that F R Jones have them. Is there anywhere else that I should consider or am I best to go with them? They do look to be very good value. Also, I was planning on getting this PPE kit... Husqvarna Chainsaw Protective Kit It says that the trousers (chaps) are class A. What does that mean? Thanks.
  2. Thanks.
  3. Who is Justin?
  4. Thanks for the advice Chip. I'm glad I've kept you entertained. I've learnt the hard way that picking a saw can be a baffling and head spinning process...........for us amateurs anyway. I may post a pic of it. Maybe of me too in all my sparklingly clean Husky PPE. Thanks for the post David. Sounds like I've headed in pretty much the right direction then.
  5. Thanks for the answers guys. I'm taking everything you guys say as damned good advice but the reason I asked the question was because I want to understand as much as possible rather than blindly accepting it. For me and most noobs I imagine, bigger is better and what appears to be more for your money is better still but thanks to yours and Alec's posts, I now know better. I understand what you are saying Alec but I can't help but think that the route less likely to cause me trouble is getting a new one. A 550XP with a 15" bar it is then. Just think how many more dumb questions I'll ask when I've got it.
  6. I've asked some dumb questions so I thought I may aswell ask another. Bar Lengths. What would you use the different bar lengths for? If I was to get a saw with, say, a 15" bar what thickness would that allow me to cut? Why shouldn't you just get a long bar and use it for most job? Does the bar length affect the saw's performance or anything else I can't think of? The complete noob thanks you.
  7. I take it the 346 doesn't have all this fancy electronic trickery that the 550/560 have?
  8. Thanks Ty. As I mentioned earlier I could get a 346XP or a 550XP for £25 more and I'm torn which to get. I'm a bit reserved about the 550 incase it has the same problems as the 560 and the 346 is the older model. My head is spinning on this one.
  9. I do need to get my finger out and buy a saw but I'mstill unsure on which one to get. My friendly neighbourhood tree surgeon dropped another load of wood off this morning. I've got the stuff everywhere now. Thanks for the link. Rational or irrational that it may be, I am reluctant to buy a secondhand saw. Not knowing it's history and whether it's been thrashed and abused means that if it went boom I would be screwed and Ebay is mainly sold as seen.
  10. I agree. An 18 would be too much for me. I was just getting carried away because the prices from 25 to 18 is tiny. Thanks for the info stubby. I wonder if 2012 550XP saws have had remedial mods carried out.
  11. Has there been any conclusive findings from the 560XP issues? Is it just early saws affected or is it pot luck? Do Huskys have a date plate on them anywhere?
  12. Patience......................tomorrow............................maybe. You guys can't wait for me to mutilate myself can you.
  13. Has the 550 got the same problems as the 560?
  14. I hadn't thought about a demo Alec but the trouble is that the places with the best prices for these saws are unlikely to do demos and I'd feel pretty crap about myself going to a dealer for a demo with no intention of buying from them. You're right about the price step. It is difficult to know where to stop but the tree surgeon who effectively started all this by giving me the wood did say to get an XP. I should have took his advice sooner, but some things take time to dawn on you. It's good to hear that you're not dead btw.
  15. Spoke to the missus. It looks like we're getting a 346XP with an 18" bar and a Hushy safety kit. It's a lot more money than I planned on spending but it should last for donkey years. Now, as mentioned, for £25 more I could get the 550XP. Is this a no brainer? Am I going to kill myself with a pro saw or would I wish I had got one if I get a lesser saw.
  16. what size bar?
  17. I take it the 550 is the new one
  18. A terrible thing has just happend. The missus just said "why don't you just buy a 346XP then?"
  19. :laugh1:
  20. Wher I am now I'm just thinking that a bit of extra everything wouldn't be a bad thing. About a week ago I almost bought a Husky 140 for £300, then found the 435 for £270 (which is now £310) and so I'm thinking that £50 more gets me a very capable saw. I think to get anything orange with the ability of the DS5oo would take another big cash leap. It's all very confusing for a noob like me.
  21. You can't beat a bit of Godzilla.
  22. Deacon Blue?
  23. I hear you but it would make sense to spend a little more and get something that will handle that bit more maybe or am I just getting the urge for more power?
  24. No offense taken. Things have changed slightly though. I've just looked at the place I was considering getting the 435 from anf the price has gone up from £269 to £309 so I would be spending more anyway. He was expecting a batch i today or tomorrow so I wonder if Husky upped the price. I'm not cynical enough to suspect it's gone up because I said I was interested in buying one.
  25. Oh bo****ks. I've just realised that the Lawson link is pre vat prices so instead of being £303, the DCS500 is £369. Not the end of the World but what else can I get for a similar price with that sort of power. The Husky 435 where I started is over a HP down on the DCS500 and would be pushed to do what I wanted it to do.
