Had a look at this oak today.The customer already told me that he had sent a sample of the bracket off to the RHS and they had informed him that it was Inonotus dryadeus. Firstly I noted the Merpilus present as well, but I really don't believe that the other brackets are dryadeus ??

Looks just as likely they have been reduced and grouted blockwork put in place. If so, where do you start to explain why that's a bad idea?

I never said anything was a bad idea. Purely trying to get a history of any construction around the tree. Dont you think that would be useful to know ?

To me it looks like the levels around the tree have been raised, when was that paving done ?

Judging by the host and the location on the tree I would say a desicated L. sulphurous. Chicken of the woods:thumbup1:
