Looks just as likely they have been reduced and grouted blockwork put in place. If so, where do you start to explain why that's a bad idea?

I never said anything was a bad idea. Purely trying to get a history of any construction around the tree. Dont you think that would be useful to know ?

To me it looks like the levels around the tree have been raised, when was that paving done ?

Judging by the host and the location on the tree I would say a desicated L. sulphurous. Chicken of the woods:thumbup1:
