  3. Hi all. does anybody have an idea what wood this is ?. a friend dropped off a lump of it for me to mill. ive never been great at identifying trees after they have been cut into sections. my friend recons its elm.... he err ehm hmm thinks i never thought anything of it until i done the first cut and had a look at it. in my experience elm is a harder wood to cut than this is and the wood color is darker than this. cheers Mark
  4. im really new to milling and had been wondering what to do with the first cut which is nothing more than bark with a thin layer of wood i dont like to waste anything so here is what a come up with. i also done some of the smaller bits as house numbers etc. im not the greatest carver but i was going for a really rustic look with the carving marks left in. cheers Mark
  5. Hi all here is a sycamore vase that i just finished its 10" x 8" and finished in danish oil then wax. c&c welcome. cheers Mark
  6. Hi all. thanks for all the kind comments. i usually sand down to 600 then a layer of sanding sealer if i want a high gloss like on the purple heart i use 3 coats of chestnut wood wax 22. and buff it between coats if not i use 3 coats of danish oil 1 coat per day and give it a buff. cheers Mark

  8. Hi all. Rob i am trying to keep that like butter feeling and keep the chain as sharp as possible i have one of those sharp boy grinders but to be honest i end up finishing it manually because i don't feel that i get such a good edge with the sharp boy. i think as soon as finances allow i'll be paying another visit to your site for the Granberg precision grinder. sandspider i already had the saw but the mill and chain and postage to the Scottish highlands only cost £200 which is not a lot of money. if you look at the price of woodturning blanks the mill payed for itself in the first day of milling and i have enough really nice wood to build a pick nick table and other garden furniture. i wasnt pushing the saw as its only a 029 super but i was milling a 18"x 4"x 6 foot board in under 5 minutes. iv'e only had the mill just over a week and i already milled over 400fbm. as well as turning blanks and garden furniture its also going to allow me to build a nice big workshop late next spring . Geoff the milling does seem to be a bit harder on the saw so running in is a good idea. i usually take it easy and give the saw a few minutes rest between boards i also opened the chain oil screw fully because i felt the chain wasn't getting enough oil but other than that the little 029 seems to be milling away quite happily cheers Mark
  9. Hi guys. thanks for taking the time to give me advice on this. i am in a woodturning club but we meet in a wood mill the owner lets us use it and sells woodturning supplies to the club. iv'e never met him but from what i can make out he is a really decent guy so i wouldnt be comfortable selling blanks to club members. i think im going to use the wood to build a few nice pieces of garden furniture and cut a load of blanks and wax and air dry them. maybe in the future if i get a big load of wood i might talk to the mill owner and see if he is interested in buying some. thanks again for the advice cheers Mark
  10. i recently got a small log mill with a view to making boards for my woodturning. after i got the mill i enjoyed it so much i got a little overzealous and ended up milling over 200 board feet of elm willow and spalted beech. anyway to cut a long story short a guy who sells woodturning blanks offered to buy it off me but he works in cubic feet. he is paying £7 per cubic foot. 200fbm = 16.67 cu ft = £ 116.69 and he wants it delivered 60 miles away at that price. i hadn't really intended to sell any wood so i haven't looked into prices but that seems very low to me or am i just over estimating the price of milled wood ? any advice on this would be apreciated cheers Mark
  11. I ordered a small log mill and ripping chain from Rob D's site which arrived today. initially i was planning to use it just to rip up some boards for my woodturning but after seeing the results it looks too good just to cut up for bowl blanks so i think i'll be making some nice garden furniture from the hardwood and maybe a new bigger workshop from the pine and i'll use the offcuts for bowls . this is a lump of willow its 18" at its widest and i cut it to 4" depth for bowls as you can see from the ripples i need a little more practice . but i was amazed at the result from my first attempt and that ripping chain went through it like butter. cheers Mark
  12. Hi all. i am contemplating buying a small log mill to cut up some boards for my woodturning hobby. i was planning to get the small log mill and and i have an old 029 super lying in the shed so i was gonna get a rip chain for an 18 inch bar. my lathe is small and will take a maximum of a 12 inch blank so i wouldn't be cutting any boards over 16 inches by 3-4 inches deep. i wouldn't be cutting multiple logs per day it would be more of a when i need it basis. the wood types i'll be cutting is ash, sycamore, beech, elm mostly. my questions are will i need to buy a different sprocket for the saw and do you guys think the saw will handle it ok or will i end up killing it. this is just for my hobby so i am trying to keep the spend as low as i can. cheers Mark

    029 super

thanks for your responses the first thing i done was drained it and put new fuel and chain oil in it as i didnt want to run it on degraded fuel i talked to my neighbor and she gave me the service sheet.diaphram was changed on the last service just over 3 weeks ago is there an exhaust or carb mod that will give it a bit more oomph. its currently bogging down while im trying to cut 12-15 inch copper beech or is that the best old saws like that can do ?

    029 super

hi i got offered a 029 super for a good price so i bought it its a 1999 model it had been run for under 3 hours in total then it was put back in its box and only removed for its yearly service. i know this to be true as the seller is a neighbor the saw is in brand new condition the piston ect is immaculate the only problem is that the saw bogs down easily and seems to be lacking in power. is this just because the older engines werent as powerfull or is there anything i can do to get a bit more power out of it ? thanks Mark
