  1. I am currently in the process of leaving the Army after being injured in Afghanistan, my injuries do not restrict me at all regarding work, I am moving into a career in Tree Surgery, by the end of June I will have the following qualifications, gained from a very reputable company; Kingswood Training Services.

NPTC Unit CS30 – Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting

NPTC Unit CS31 – Felling Trees up to 380mm diameter

NPTC Unit CS38 – Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue

NPTC Unit CS39 – Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness

LANTRA Cert. – Use of Woodchippers

LANTRA Cert. – Use of Stumpgrinders

LANTRA Cert. – Business Studies for Tree Surgeons

So I was looking for advice from people in the North West, I live in the Greater Manchester area, on, if my qualifications and record in the military, would give me a good start in this new career? And also where to look for employment?

I am leaving the Army ranked as a Cpl, very fit and strong even with my injuries, also I have an Exemplary Military Record and testimonial that reflects that.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated...!

  2. Please don't bottle it , try to think of the worst day of your life , x it by 10 or more if you already receive medical support for depression on life ie ( Fungi, trees, Stihl ms200, OR Husky or not , work , staff ) then try to think of a day as a serviceman , on the front line, fighting for YOU, TRYING NOT TO BE BLOWN UP BY AN IED OR TO BE SHOT, sorry cap locks stuck on bit, then consider mne A's position ................Life ,come on I'm sorry , but I' m going all out in support of mne A.

Here here it's a joke, what about when the boots on the other foot, they wouldn't think twice a bout killing not only soldiers but women or kids.

    He should be released immediately.

  3. We went pretty much same route recently, a few must sees are, falls of mysak near Ullapool. Kyle of lochalsh Eileen donnagh castle. And the forestry commision campsite Cairngorms near the mountain centre I've forgotten the name but it's got a small loch and woodland with red squirrels.

It's also worth doing dunked and the hermitage on the way back down the A9, where you can see quite a few heritage trees.

  4. James, I'm happy to stand by my reply that holders of CS39 + MEWP ticket don't require CS47 as the correct answer. :001_smile:

    Cheers..

    Paul

You are technically correct Paul, but there is quite a bit more than tension and compression taught on a CS47 course.

There are very few similarities between using a saw from MEWP/harness, for instance 39 no mention of how and why attachment of saw to bucket, positioning in relation to cutting ETC,

Isn't it all about being trained to cope with the task at hand? Not sure where a person/employer would stand if there where an incident where he/she was not trained for the task at hand despite it not being a prerequisite.

or should i concerntrate on my cs quals?

so what i would like from each perspective if you have done a course*distance learning im most intrested in.

if you are an employer what would you look for at what level?

hope this makes sense and isnt too vague.

    Ian c

    Hi Ian

Get real experience and your CS quals first then a level2 such as isa cert ETC, the degree should come only after experience

  6. I have an opportunity to do either the Kingswood tree surgeon cse or the Pro Climb cse and was wondering if anyone has completed these and has feedback, the Pro Climb also offer Cs 32 & 40 where as Kingswood don't, are these a massive show stopper or is Cs 30,31,38,39 enough to get started, i am just finishing in the military and am looking at it as a new profession. I understand courses are no way experience and will start at the bottom, I will be settling in S Wales and hoping this will work out !!! Any ideas or help is greatfully appreciated.

    Kingswood all the way.

The other units can be added afterwards and are a bit much for a new starter

If you any more info feel free to ring me on 07791605132

  7. Heads up, had a couple of saws stolen from inside the truck whilst we were loading to go! N13 6 DL. Must have been away from the truck 45 seconds max! My 200T and a firms 365 special.

Words can not describe how pissed of I am!

    Be careful.

Hey Paul that's **** hope they chop their own heads off

  8. Dear All

I am intending to embark on a 5 week training course with Kingswood training in May/June-13 as the main element of my Military resettlement training.

i am aware from the numerous posts on this site that the majority of companies require experience, and tend to have that as a pre-requisite on their vacancy advertisements.

My main question is whether companies are in general are willing to take on guys with little experience in a groundsman capacity with a view to allowing progression to climber?

I also intend to complete my driving C+E and off road courses and a General NEBOSH certificate as other posts have led me to believe these will aid in employment

i would be very grateful for honest and frank opinions and advice from people with recent experience in either finding employment or seeking to employ someone in this industry

    Kind regards

    Rob:confused1:

    Hi Rob

as per the other posts you are doing the right courses to get your foot in the door with any decent firm, even the NEEBOSH will be beneficial to an approved contractor etc,

I sometimes instruct courses at kings wood for service leavers etc and can tell you that you will get a great start there, and with your squaddie ethic you should do well in this trade.

  9. :confused1:

I've just started felling a few easy smallish trees on my place here in France. The last owner left a lot of firewood that is in various stages of seasoning and I hope that will keep us going for 1-2 years.

I have been stacking the felled trees to season before cutting into logs on the assumption they will be easier to cut then.

But I thought I'd ask for opinions from the experts on here as I'm new to this.

All advice will be much appreciated.

Hey Paul it's terry how's it going

  10. Hi All

I have just joined the group and am looking for advice particularly from those in the South West of England. I Have Recently left the Royal Marines after 13 years and am looking into a career in Tree work and Fencing. I already have my Lantra chainsaw maintenance/cross cutting and small trees and was thinking of doing NPCT quals to include climbing. I have some previous experience climbing (mostly cliff assaults but still on a rope) and having been bought up in a rural environment have some experience fencing which includes close board, post and rail and stock netting. I am currently working abroad in a different line of work but wish to end this job in the next 2 years and want to be prepared for when the time comes.

    Any advice most welcome

    Happy Christmas
