I bought an 18 inch rollomatic stihl bar cost 55E. Also bought a stihl smart log holder for 135E. Dont know why I didnt buy a log holder sooner. Spares the back a lot. 18 inch bar is better on my 391. The 20 inch bar was too cumbersome for my jobs. Thanks for recommending I go for a smaller bar.

I am from Ireland. Priced a 20" stihl bar locally for 55E. Chain for 28E. Dont seem to badly priced. I see the point about the 16" bar. From the sound of it I should get the 18" bar. Sure it's not the end of the world if it does'nt suit me. Can always change down the road.

I have to get a new bar and chain for my stihl ms391. It had a 20" bar on it. I was thinking of getting a 18" bar for it this time round. My cutting involves firewood for my own use, i.e cutting down a tree on the farm once a year or so. Would I get as much out of the smaller bar? Also, is oregon considered a good make?

When would be the best time to top leylandii? Can I do it now? Also, I just cut down popular trees what should I do to prevent them shooting again?

Not that I am aware of. I am defitinetely not going to go asking. Probably a tax on it. It looks like Alder is the one to go with. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond.

Thanks lads. I had been told Ash would probably be best to start cutting in 10 to 12 years but given that there is a risk of the dieback disease. There is a lot of mature Ash growing on the hedgerows around the farm. It seems that this can form a "chain" for the disease to spread through the country side and to my small plantation. Birch was next tree recommended followed by Larch. I have just looked up on Alder. I have seen Alder a lot on the side of rivers & streams. Is it okay to grow on stagnant water? It looks like it could be a suitable tree.

I have 1/2 acre of wetland on the farm whick I am considering planting for firewood for my own use. I would anticipate that the firewood will be burnt both in a free standing and an insert stove. The water table is high so I will have to dig a shallow drain to drain some water off the surface. I have heard that there is a disease that could wipe out an Ash plantation. Thanks a lot for your replies. It looks like I will be spending money on this timber. I got a moisture content (MC) reading done on it and it was showing 25% MC. The supplier has agreed to take it back so this might be the best thing. I should probably wait until spring or summer before I get replacment timber. I just wonder if anyone knows how good Larch timber is? I got a fencing job done on the farm this summer and I was supplied ( and charged plenty) with larch strainers & intermediate posts. The contarctor told me that Larch was a good hardwood. But I recently read that Larch is a hard Softwood. Anyone got experience with Larch?

Hello, I recently purchased larch tounge and groove timber that has started to get covered in green spots ( please see images attached). I was going to use this timber for a garage door but am now unsure how it will turn out. Does someone know what this is called? Can this timber be stained?

Has anyone heard of Pfanner chainsaw trousers (please see picture attached). I just bought this trouser recently for 100euro second hand in very good condition. Seller said they were the best you could buy. They looked to be of very good quality.

The bar is a Rollomatic E made in Germany. The word SARP is stamped on each chain link. The number 25 is stamped on the depth gauge end of each cutter.

I have a stihl ms391. What filing tool do I need for this chainsaw? I saw on eBay there is one that can be clamped onto the blade or there is a hand held file. Also, the number 25 is stamped on the cutters, what does this stand for? I use my chainsaw for firewood and farm use. Thanks for replys.

Just bought a still ms391 with a 20" bar. Very nice chainsaw with plenty of horsepower. Just a bit on the heavy side though. -
I have just bought a Stihl MS391 with 20"bar. What would be the best 2 stroke and bar chain oil for it? Can the oils be purchased online? What type of file should I get for sharpening the blade? Thanks for any tips.

I have a JCB 412 farm master year 1991. The brakes are not working fully on it and I was hoping to repair it myself. I have to apply a lot of pressure to the brake pedal in order to stop the loader - does someone know what might be the problem? Thanks.

I have been quoted 250euro including delivery to Ireland for a 2 metre cover. Male and female parts are 6euro's. I have not got a price for the splicing kit, which I am sure will need to be purchased. Other forum sites say that the product they had over 10 years ago was very good and durable but that the newer product is prone to disintegration very quickly. Luckily, I recalled a local contractor who used the total guard. He is no longer contracting so he is letting me have 2 second hand guards (they are the older types and are in v.g.c) plus male and female parts for 50euro. Happy days. Is there much modifications required to the tractor or implement? Should I go for the bolt on or weld on female parts?

Does anyone have experience of the Total Guard for pto's? It is supplied by spaldings. It is much more expensive than the traditional pto guard's.

Just to let you know that the problem with the tractor was sourced to the 'poteniometers'. The garage fitted 2 of them and the tractor is working again. Thanks to everyone who responded.

I had someone to look at the tractor and they calibrated it and off she went for a few more weeks before the problem returned. I have had a garage to look at it at they are going to replace the 'pentameter' to see if thats the problem. Johno1 Limerick Ireland.

The linkage is working fine. All the A,B,C gear lights are flashing. The tractor first would not go into reverse now the forward gears are gone.
