  1. I worked from Driffield across to Pocklington 3 yrs ago - consenting is quite easy on HV - I was employed - car fuel supplied sleeping over - taking home £500.00 per week but I had to hit my targets of minimum of 50 consents per week. LV target was 65 per week and unachievable.

I worked hard and was paid well - If you go freelance self employed you will find it pays well you will make more money BUT you wont get paid for 90 days so you may have to get a loan to pay for the expenses

    Wasn't NG contract then....

  2. Hi all

I have been climbing for the last 3 years on private jobs working for different contractors.

I'm thinking about switching to the railway have noticed on a few threads alot of guys saying railway work sucks why is this?

I know I'll need to get sponsorship for pts but any other sort of info ie shift patterns what the works like & what to expect would be appreciated thanks for reading

Rail work just doesn't suit some people. Can be a lot of waiting around in the middle of the night in the wind and rain for a start. Depends what your used to really? No two ways about it it is a dangerous environment. You could have a long walk to site, while carrying equipment with trains running past you at 90mph+ (you can't be chatting to people on route to site). You really have to be switched on while working you have to think all the time about what you

and the people your working with are doing.

You could be stripping ivy off bridge or taking down some big Oaks under a possession. could be on the same site for weeks clearing 0-8m for miles or onsite for a couple of hours clearing a culvert.

The money can be good with the unsociable hours if you don't mind it, generally speaking the Rail guys are a good bunch and there is a lot of positivity and good feelings amoung them, very much a 'let's work together, get it done safely and enjoy it' attitude.

As long as your switched on to H&S, work hard and don't mind the odd night shift in the rain you'll be fine

That's just what I have seen over the last 6-7months.
