what area was it taken from?

Hi
I recently had a lot of chainsaws, strimmers, hedgecutters etc stolen. A few days later they were on Ebay and the police went and retrieved them all, as well as lots of other similar items. The problem they have is people do not record their serial numbers or note identifyable damage, which makes it really hard for them to find their owners.
Please write down your numbers and you'll be more likely to get your stuff back

Hi
I have been asked to enquire if anyone would be interested in milling a large oak. The person wants to keep the oak so it is priced on your milling rate. The oak is about 5ft at the base tapering to 4-4.5 ft at the first branch, giving 20ft of trunk probably into 2 10ft lengths.
They want it it full width slabs or planks so I presume an Alaskan job?
Please pm your contact details and i'll pass them on. The job is near Dorking

Hi
I've been contacted by someone looking for some apple:
"Hi there
I am from a windmill in Derbyshire, run by a Charity, and we are seeking some pieces of seasoned apple wood to make cogs for one of our gears.
We need to obtain sufficent to make about 15 cogs each made from approx 6 1/2" long x 5" wide x 2" thick timber , as blanks , from which the cogs will be carved. Of course longer pieces we could cut would be acceptable ! One of our members can make the cogs."
Any ideas anyone?

I was felling some sweet chestnut today, and put my saw out of the way whilst I loaded the trailer with our 6T excavator. Loaded most of the trunks and decided to get one more forgetting where i had left my saw. To my horror i looked down to see the bar of my MS390 sticking out from under the steel track of the digger. I reversed off and was amazed to find the saw had sunk into some soft soil and I retrieved it with onlt 3 cracks in the plastic casing.
It fired up and used it all afternoon. Won't be doing that again!

It sounds like a few of us are knocking out chopping boards for christmas. With regard to the food safe oil, I have a woodturning friend who buys the one from ikea, and it is quite cheap, not sure of the name though

Hi,
I understand the benefits of sycamore for chopping boards, but does the wood have to be seasoned or can it be green or partially dried.
Many thanks
-
I have some sycamore drying but not that wide. Can you join a couple of bits together? Does the sycamore need to be dried or can you use green wood? I'm near Ripley so close to you. If you want to give me a ring tommorrow on 07981 905009 Alex

Just followed the Tim Stead link. Amazing stuff. This has to be the most amazing piece of furniture I have seen in a long time.

Someone contacted me regarding planking of a yew tree in there garden. It is in maidenhead, Berkshire. They said:
"It is roughly 1m diameter at chest height. There isn’t great access: not possible for a truck, it would have to be moved manually on a trolley or something. Some sort of mobile mill sounds perfect. Ideally, I would keep a few planks and the person chopping it can have the rest. It was lopped at about 5m high >5 years ago, but it isn’t fully dead, as shoots continue to grow out of one side."
If anyone is interested i'll pass your details on

looks great. Fantastic grain. Are the legs free standing or set innthe ground?
Quite a modest pad you have there.... if I sell enough planks we'll upsize as well!

Thank you,
Some fine advice. Exactly what I was wondering.

No advice?

I understand the rule of thumb about air drying planks as a year an inch plus a year for drying time. Is the water moving along the grain to the ends of the plank as opposed to moving acoss the grain. If so surely this means that shorter planks will dry a lot quicker?
I'm asking as a customer who wants a load of planks when dry will need them in short sections. Perhaps cutting into shorter lengths and sealing ends still will allow them to dry quicker, or will I just waste a lot of wood with lots more end cracks? The planks are 2 1/4 beech and oak in 12ft lengths. should I shorten them to 6ft long?

Wow,
That is an impressive lump of beech

Porch finished and roofed. Used the sweet chesnut as 4x4 posts and beam and 4x2 rafters. Lovely looking wood but had to be stained to match the black timbers of the 300+ yr old cottage.
The wood was easy to work green. put a couple of small natural edge planks as seats where the tenant sits out and smokes!

Hi,
looking into the possiblity of a woodmizer LT15 for the estate. Has anyone got one, or have used one. I've seen an LT40 in action and am aware it has a lot more frills.
Thanks

Just did all ours with the soldering iron. Put stolen and our posts code everywhere and rubbed black paint into the melted letters, makes them harder to try and sell on if stolen
