  1. Dear Forum, The Arb Association is running a series of seminars to promote BS3998:2010. I am writing to the forum to ask for those of you out there who have contact with tree surgeons to promote the event to them, and indeed come along yourselves. The reason that the AA asked me to help is that in January myself and my colleagues ran a successful seminar on a local level in Devon – we did this because we were aware that many local tree surgeons are rather isolated and often disconnected from the industry. We realised that compliance with the revised BS standard puts contractors in a position where ‘ARB Approved Contractor’ status would be the logical next step. Paul Smith came along and promoted the AA and the revised Arb Approved scheme that is now more inclusive for smaller businesses. The success of our event was in no small part down to the support of our Local TO’s who promoted the event to tree surgeons in their area – AA members or otherwise. We had great feedback from the seminar we ran and managed to fill the places within a few days -– several of the delegates have told us that they now want to go back to the books or become qualified following the event. We were delighted with this and feel that we achieved our objective. We feel that many forum members will have direct access to the sort of contractors who will be interested in this so I am appealing to you all (and especially to the local authority tree officers) to spread the word and encourage your local contractors to come along – hopefully this will benefit you as well as them. The course is reasonably priced (£50) and the BSI have extended the 50% discount for the document to attendees. In my opinion the revised standard is a well written, professional and comprehensive document and I believe that the industry should support and promote it. I have included a link with the details of the local events. Any queries then please contact me off forum - [email protected].
