Great carvings. I wish I had access to red cedar. The ponderosa pine I have to work with isn't holding up that well. As for something new to carve, I've been wanting to do a sea turtle. It would go with your sea horse. Peace, Keith

Yes, so far they are all done from Jamie Doeren's books. Still trying to get the proportions down. Eagle eyes facing slightly forward instead of looking to the side. I make so many mistakes that I beat myself up over that it's frustrating. I'm having a hard time finding GOOD logs without having to spend an arm and a leg. People have given me logs but they are not quality wood so I get half way through a carving and want to pitch it.

You can go to Bailey's online and get their carving packages for about $120. I've got the 10 inch package on my husky and I love it. -

Would anyone be so kind as to critique my work. I do it for fun. Although I've sold some I'd rather carve than sell. This is my first try at an eagle in this position. Thanks

I get that all the time carving Ponderosa Pine. Some people have told me it's from the Pine Beetle but I don't think so as it's in most of the wood I carve. Just exactly what IS the best way to preserve a carving that's being displayed outdoors? I sold a bear to some friends and went by their house and within a month it had cracked badly even with a kerf cut. Right now I'm just using Spar poly coat. Minwax. So I carved them a new bigger bear with a piece of purchased log and coated it four times. So it cost me $60 to replace a bear that I got $50 for but at least I can sleep at night. I won't put the effort into carving any more crappy wood. It's not worth it.

I would sell this for around 80-100 us. But I don't carve for the money. It's nice to pay for some of my equipment but I want to carve, not market. I've managed to sell some carvings by word of mouth but I give quite a few away to friends and family. The going rate I've heard from the people who sell the by the masses is $100 a foot. I've sold a four foot bear for $180.
