  1. Thanks all

Might get them to put up bird boxes in another area but am running out of jute tree tie webbing to hang them up with.

Anyone got any ideas what else I can use that wont choke the trees?

I want to avoid nail use but have been given lots of aluminium nails to use and want to arrive with a better alternative so I can dissuade the client from wounding lots of trees if we can avoid it. :confused1:

  2. Hi All

Just doing my risk assessment and have a small quandry

Myself and my students will be working (tree planting) in a small woodland tomorrow where TSs wll be on site dismantling trees.

Is the safe working distance still 2 tree lengths when stuff is being roped and dropped down?

Am thinking we may not be able to go to the wood if so as nowhere is that far away so the wood is too small.

Client thought it a good idea to book us both on the same day!

Trees are all tall overcrowded sycamore

    Thanks is advance

  3. at the beginning of spring a few years back (when hunting with dogs was legal) i took my old lurcher bitch on a garden clearance job i had on as i was on my own and this job was near a real nice forest that i thought would be nice to have a wander round at dinner with her, as all you had to do was jump the customers fence, cross a field and you was straight on to a public footpath. the customer was a nice old lady, really polite and pretty posh!!! i asked her if she had a problem with me going and she said no, so i strimmed the back garden and went off for a mooch about at dinner. my bitch was off the lead having a good old sniff about, when she picked up a fresh sent and set off after something. not thinking the worse i just imagined she was after a rabbit or a hare, when all of a sudden a herd of about 30 fallow deer came running out the wood and in to the field, heading straight towards the job with my bitch in hot pursuit, i tried to stop her but it was no use and just as she was running past the job she pulled one down and its screaming its head off!!! i ran over as fast as i could and managed to get her off it, looked up and the customer, her son, his wife and three kids are all looking at me in disbelief at what just happened :blushing: they laughed it off in the end as they were true country folk who understood accidents can happen with dogs and wildlife!!!! i never knew deer were in the area and the bitch was a retired rabbiting dog (12 years old!!) so the chances of that happening were 10000 to 1 lol but i learnt a lesson that day and keep them safely on the lead now if i do take one to work!!!!:thumbup1:

  4. I shall go and re-investigate then and take my mallet!

Tree has grown round a barbed wire fence and has other trees growing through it but is close to a lightly (barely) used footpath so will inform landowner it may require investigation

One thing though, I didn't see any obvious evidence of rings on the stem?

  5. Evening all

I wonder if you could help me with a fungal ID please :001_smile:

It has me totally stumped (!) but it's probably very bleedin' obvious but I am having a dim moment (it's my age you know, . . . during the war. . . .).

If you could help I would be very grateful

Seen on Oak in last 2 weeks.

  6. Im not sure if either case has actually been concluded and wonder of the wisdom of discussing it on a public forum until both are completely resolved

Certainly does throw up some points for general discussion though as to duty of care and liability to the public (children, those invited onto your land and not forgetting the duty of care to trespassers too)

Surely the act of carrying out tree inspections shows that a duty of care must exist and that CROW doesnt absolve liability in these cases?

Will be interesting to see how a "natural feature" is defined

  7. I had always heard that burning softwood would cause the tars/creosote to condense in the chimney and cause possible chimney fires

I have an unlined cob (mud, straw and animal dung mix) chimney and my stove ( villager C) draws well even when shut right down (cant keep it in over night as cant shut it down enough) - so are you guys saying softwood (well dried) is absolutely fine?

I burn hardwood logs and softwood eco log pellet things at present (pellets are very dry)
