Try using Honey rather then rooting power if your going to take a cutting works a treat.

The other option is to make your own Branch cutting pot, you can buy them over the net, but its always more fun to try yourself. Get a normal black garden pot about three or four inches in diameter cut in half-length ways.

Tie a price of string or plastic around the branch just below where you would like to take the cutting.

Gently remove some of the bark about an inch and rub with honey, put the cut pot around the tie and exposed bark.

Tape the pot together, add compost and water, keep watering when required. Hopefully if all goes well in 12-16weeks this should start to root in the pot and you can cut the pot off the tree below the tie and you have a new plant.

You may need to support the pot to ensure its straight but try it works great

Your tree can look a little stilly with pots tape to it but if you want a true tree rather then grafting working really well.

This works really well for bonsai trees as well.

I've been AAAC for 3years and have my re-assessment in two years. As long as you tick the boxes on the assessment you'll be fine.

Now i'm not saying that I've got loads of work out of this scheme if any!!!!

And if i'm honest being CHAS accredited contractor gets you a lot more work.

And if the Tree Guild are to have standards for membership, then they will have to look into how anyone runs there business too !! with standards for how they do work !!!!

I like the idea of the Tree Guild But how will it be better than what we already have ?

The schemes you mention have both failed, IMO, as take up has been so small as to render them impractical, IE if you wanted 3 quote from AAAC in my area you could not get them.

 

After many years of people asking them for change they have failed to move, so many have built up resentment and distrust of them.

 

Hopefully this new body will talk to real cutters at the coal face not accountant types who's chosen business just happens to be tree work.

 

And the assessments will be of Arb practice, not business practice.

Don't get me wrong I totally agree with you, but you have to ask the question of procurement managers in large companies and Local Authorities.

They don't really understand our industry and neither the ISA or the AA have not made big enough steps in the right direction.

There is only so many times you can re-invent a standard in industry !!!!

People may not agree with the AAAC but as long as you do everything right then it is easy to get !!! (even for small companies)

The ISA is more for the individuals !!!

So where would The Tree Guild fit in ?

If your an ISA Cert Arb, Professional Member of the AA, AA Approved Contractor, CHAS accredited contractor.

Why would you pay for another Approval/Accredited !!!! Its starting to cost and lot of money!!!

I have to agree with Yorkshireman, done both !!! and joining your local chamber of commerce works really well, you can't just go to one meeting dish out loads of business cards and never go again.

Build up good relationships and you'll find you get a lot of referrals.

And the main thing is you will be the only tree person there.

We use ALS Roots Mycorrhizae and it works really well, never normally used on its own but with correct soil fertilisation, back up with a soil sample you can really see the difference

Works really well as a preventative control.

Firstly you have to work out what your fertiliser goals are ?

i) Maintain vitality

ii) Promote growth

iii) Correct deficiency

iv) Compensate for pest or other problem

v) Compensate for root loss or decline

We identified the problem first and establish the correct goal and always take a soil sample to work out the deficiency. As just adding fertiliser to a tree can cause more problems.

This then opens a can of worms at where you stop

i) Soil Nutrient Sampling

ii) Foliar Nutrient Sampling

iii) Percolation Testing

iv) Bulk Density Testing

v) Organic or in-organic fertiliser

vi) Soil de-compaction

But the best place to start would be to get a copy of the ISA best management practices notes on Tree and Shrub Fertilisation.

Our employment contracts clear state that we require a driving license, if we lose it for any reason then we lose out job, its the same for the lads and managers, (last year one of our managers was let go for drink driving) as for training we have to paid back any training, we have taken. 100% pay back within one year of the training. 50% after one year and its all free after two years which seems fair.

You can only do so much for some people !!!
