  1. Thanks a lot for your help Rob, I really appreciate it. I sent you a PM earlier today with a few questions about the work you have. Regards, Sam.
  2. A little more than 2, yeah I am going to phone around, though posting here surely can't hurt.
  3. Hi, I am looking for work as a groudsman in my home area of the Isle of Wight, U.K. I am a student studying for a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Arboriculture at Sparsholt College in Hampshire, and am out in a year's work placement to gain industry experience. I am very willing and eager to work under an arborist to gain valuable experience. I hold CS30 and CS38 currently, and own my own PPE, although not a harness. I do not currently have my own transport, though am working towards it, though until then I am very willing to make full use of buses. I am located in Newport, so if convenient, I can be picked up if you're traveling through anyway, and will go to the most convenient place for you. What with the poor economic climate, I am willing to work for a little less than standard groundsman rates, as gaining experience is both mine and the College's top priority. I am happy in either an employed or self-employed role, and would really appreciate any work you may be able to offer. Please contact me if you have any work or advice. Thanks for reading.
  4. No, I'm not tied to any days, that's just the average I'll be working a week with him. I'll be looking to work with other people to hopefully fill out the week. I think the issue has been solved thanks to you and a few helpful others. All I need to do now is explain to my boss that I'm not capable of being a sub-contractor and so are OK insurance-wise. Thanks again all.
  5. That helps, thanks. As for the question, no, I'll be using everything of his except for PPE. I think he thinks that I may start going off on my own like a sub-contractor would later in the year, but that's just not going to happen. For one, there's no way I could afford my own truck, and I'll be back at Uni next September, so that's just not practical. This is just work experience for three days a week So in all, from what you all have said, I won't be sub-contracting at all, and don't need to fork out £400-600 for insurance. Many thanks. Edit: Rupe, we must have been writing at the same time as I didn't see your post. That is very helpful and I think you've saved me a lot of money (to me, as a student). I will just need to bring this up with him now. Thanks!
  6. Wow, now I'm just confused. My 'employer' (It's work experience more than anything, as part of my course) for the year has told me that I will be working as a sub-contractor for his company, which also means I will be self-employed. He's also told me that his PLI is only valid if the sub-contractors (his words again) he employs (me, in this case) also have their own PLI. In other words he says we both need PLI to be covered by his. Yeah I will be just a Groundsman for most of the year I imagine, but from what he's told me that doesn't change anything. I'd like to figure this out now this discussion has sparked off, please can you (or anyone) advise further? Thanks.
  7. Hi, I am on a practical year as part of my Degree and will be working as a self-employed sub-contractor for one or more Tree Surgeons. I need public liability insurance, and would like to hear any recomendations regarding the company/policy that you may have. I'll be working as a groundsman for the most part, as the only tickets I have are CS30 and Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue. I imagine this will affect the cost of the insurance as I am very unlikey to be climbing. Also, will I need £1m or £2m cover? Many thanks for any advice you can offer.
  8. Thanks guys for those links. I've found some pretty good sources for tree provenance. Quick responses too, which I didn't expect .
  9. I'm looking for any good websites that can tell me the best provenances for various commonly grown U.K. trees. Has anyone had any experience dealing with tree provenance? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
