  1. so rock climbing harnesses can be used for adults and children when it comes to climbing trees. I would assume they have the same e.n or Ce weight strength etc
  2. hi, was just wondering if rock climbing harnesses were ok to use for tree climbing on a recreational basis. at what age would you recommend a child goes from full body harness to a normal harness. thanks guys
  3. hi, i would like to talk about your moment when you made the decision to work for your business full time. For those that are thinking about starting your own business or are currently holding down a full time job and working hard on the weekends promoting and doing your own jobs at what point do think about working full time for yourself and how much of a risk is it? either way when it comes to business there isnt any gaurantee and theres always risks to take somewhere along the line, whether thats taking a loan on equipment or doing it for yourself fulltime
  4. Hi, just a curious about the work that is done in utility. Is utility work easier that general arboriculture and if you had to put it in percentage how much climbing do you do? i.e do you do alot from a mewp or landrover bucket etc.. also has anyone here worked for BTS and if so what are they like to work for? cheers
  5. and what is r bell tree services like to work for? ive noticed the fountains advertisment, what are fountains like to work for?
  6. was wondering if there are any jobs going in norfolk?, full time.
  7. interesting what you have all said. some of you have said that you sub contract mostly as a groundsman, didnt thing there would be much demand for that?
  8. hi, i have put a thread on here about being self employed and have asked a few questions about it so anymore in put would be much appreciated. I have another wonder about it though, for those that became self employed or sub contracted themselves out for the first time did you find it nerve racking or were you confident in your ability. And how much experience did you have. i am very confident in my ability to climb and have worked on large dissmantles but cant help but get the old nerves the first day with a new company, i find myself worrying inside before we get to the job no matter how big or small even though i have done some tough and big jobs in the past. Do subbies have this problem at the beginning?
  9. ian flatters - is it better sacrifice to have a low wage in order to be your own boss, and is the reason why this is if you dont mind me asking because the equipment is expensive and they need paying off? To everyone else, would you prefer to just pay the bills but get to be your wn boss or stay employed?
  10. another thing which i have wondered about is how long has it taken some people when starting a new company (wether thats contract climber or starting a new tree surgery business) to get into a position where they start to live off it. That point between employed and self employed. Did you gamble and through lots of money into advertisement? cheers guys
  11. west midlands area i was thinking of. I have my own basic climbing kit, i think overtime i would invest in rigging kit and some saws and by then i would have lots more experience. cheers guys
  12. thanks for that. i was simply trying to get information and advice. I was intending on taking and risk and leaving my full time job, but do it on the side and slowly build it up. Once i was confident enough perhaps maybe i would think about going solo permanently. But i do appreciate everyones opinion. Needed to know what a rough going rate was because we're not charity and deserve a good rate.
  13. another thing i suppose the reason why anyone would get a contract climber in is because they want them to do the toughest trees? is that correct?
  14. ok i hear what your all saying. im just trying to find a ball park figure, perhaps it might be easier to ask what is the amount you would think "no way am i going to pay that for a climber" or a minimum where perhaps you be thinking "well he must be brand new". I know its a difficult question to ask but i was thinking for a competant climber who has a couple years under his belt then £90-£100 a day is reasonable because ive seen older threads on here where new climbers that want to be self employed ask a similar question and people have given advice that they should charge around £75 a day roughtly. wondered what everyone else thought.
  15. so you would charge a little extra then if you used your own kit, can you give me any price example? Im a competant climnber and have the basic tickets including rigging added to the fact ive been climbing for 18months what kinda of price would you epect someone like me to charge. Would you add extra for your own insurance etc..
  16. hi guys, just wondering if being self employed is better than being employed by another company. I know there is advantages and disadvantages on both side but more interested in whether there plenty of contract climbing work out there and roughly what you think is a fair price for a contract climber. cheers
  17. hi you desperate for a hand? i may be able to assist those days.
  18. I think UKMINCH is right, that for people like myself who are still a little inexperienced in the game we think to much about our training and the do's and dont's. in some cases you probably will have to just dragn yourself along. I'll definatly remember that.
  19. Thanks guys appreciate the tips
  20. I just wondered if I could ask for some advice on branch walking. Ive been climbing for a few months now (not regularly) and i struggle when it comes to getting far out on a limb. I cant seem to get my head round it, i dont no whether its just that my balance is terrible or I fear of falling and swinging into the tree. Is this just an experience thing? Anyone else had this problem in the past or has any tips?
