  1. Hello all,

Im curently working as a self employed climber in North Wales, work is good and all is well but ie always wanted to move up to scotland so was wondering what the work situation would be for a self employed climber,is there much up there? Id be interested in doing forestry work too. Ive got relatives near Inverness so thats the area I would think about starting at.

Only trying to get an idea for the moment but any info would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers.

    Tom.

  2. Did my MSc in environmental forestry in Bangor 10 years ago now and while I didn't earn any money for a year, struggled and had to work my ass off, it opened up a whole lot of doors that would have otherwise been closed to me. It didn't feel like it at the time (waiting for the bus into Bangor in the middle of winter in the lashing rain can bring about thoughts of dropping out!), but it was the most beneficial thing I've ever done, work-wise.

I work as a project arboriculturist mainly for big engineering firms on ongoing infrastructure (pipelines, roads, schools, hospitals) and town regeneration projects. I also do some safety and general tree health work. And I'm still based in Bangor...

Having a higher-level qualification has allowed to to get onto lots more tender lists and enter partnership frameworks with other professionals that I would have struggled to get my foot in the door with otherwise.

What I'd say is that at MSc level you really need to be in charge of your learning and lead your outcomes- if you find you're getting interested in something and you want to learn more about it, let your tutors know and they should indulge you.

    Best of luck with it.

    Very inspiring!

  3. Ditto, im just starting my PGDip (to eventually be an MSc) in Forestry at Bangor (Distance learning) so I would be interested in knowing what career options it will open up, personally im hoping for a job at management level with maybe Tilhill or the FC (if their still about) or possiby consultancy. All I know is there isn't a great deal at the moment, I regularly check the Tihill website and Countryside Jobs Service to see whats about, but plenty of time I suppose. Keep us informed.

  4. Hello!

I have for sale a large metal tool chest, originally a site lock box. Its big and blue, it is secured by a heavy duty chain and padlock across the top and another chain inside to secure the box to something else, I used it for storing my saws inside a garage.

Its dimensions are L 55", W 27", H 30". I paid £140 but now have no use for it and so its in the way. Id like £100 for it but im open to offers!

Collection from Llangollen, North Wales, I have pictures if anyone would like to see them.

    Cheers.

    Tom.

  5. Howdy all,

Im selling my Stihl BG86 hand held blower, bought it last summer, used probably half a dozen times so like new, surplus to requirement so it's going.

Any sensible offer considered before it goes on ebay.

    Located in Newport, Shropshire.

    Cheers.

    Tom.

  6. Howdy all!

Does anyone out there have a diagram to show the handle assembly on an MS200t? I took it apart to fix the earth wire which I soldered up and put it all back together but the saw still wont turn off using the switch, so would like to check ive put it back together rite or if its my dodgy repair.

    Cheers.

    Tom.

  7. Haven't had a chance to take it to one side yet, the hydraulic oil is a tad low so will top that up firstly. Also the switch under the bonnet that stops you from starting the chipper when the bonnet is up looks knackered, we've got a spare one so will try fitting that as it may be a potential cause.

A good service seems a good idea, but how often do you guys do a full service such as oil and filter? cos I thought they had plant engines which hold about 9 litres of oil and need changing rarely?

Cheers for the suggestions, I will have to make time next week to try and sort it out, before it gets any worse!

    Tom.

  8. Howdy all!

Having some trouble recently starting up the chipper, sometimes when it starts up it cuts out straight away and takes a few attemps to fire it up.

Anyone else had this problem or has any suggestions?

Also another problem is when turning the chipper left it struggles especially on low revs as if theres not enough power going to the track.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated as ever!

    Cheers.

    Tom.

  9. Definately Stretch Airs, my type c's have lasted nearly a year now with only minor problems to the crotch area, the hi-flex seemed to fall apart after a few months, a false economy I reckon. Just purchased a pair of Stretch Air Gladiators for the summer, much cooler and not so baggy also the material on the front seems bomb proof but time will tell I guess! Also very comfy to climb in, if your into climbing in class a's that is:blushing:

  10. Ive heard a rumour that they've changed the legislation on climbing trousers and that its now acceptable to climb in class a's, is this true? or do you still have to have protection at the back of the calf?

It would be good if you can, I dont know about anyone else but my legs are getting a bit sweaty just lately...

    Tom.
