I've had a quick chat with an engineer and got the following info;

From a Scottish Power view a Feeder is a substation which has multiple lines leaving it.

Line codes are not a term used up here but we use line numbers or ENID numbers which are given to every line/pole or other equipment on the network.

Hopefully someone from down south can help with the exact meaning from a DNO point of view.

From what I understand speaking to contacts is they had a permit to section the Poplar but it was clear felled. A winch was put onto the Pop but it got hung-up in a Larch. A winch was then put in the Larch! I presume the method was then to fell the Larch and the hung up Pop and have them both down in one.

The Larch failed near or above the winch point and hit this poor chap!

Like many other folks have said it’s a stark reminder of the dangers we all face on a day to day basis.

Thoughts go out to his friends & family!

Local Authority survey experience and BS 5837 Trees in Relation to Construction (2005) survey experience is desirable.

Ed is right Vol will depend upon MC and species of timber.

However you can use the FC blue book 39 (Forest Mensuration) to measure the volume of the load prior to it being loaded or estimate the basic density/moisture content and green density using formula therein.

You may also consider the measurement of stacked timber but I assume it’s already on the wagon! This method allows for air pockets within the timber stack but will not allow for MC lost at roadside.

If you require a more precise weight/vol estimation values of coefficient variation should be used.

A cubic meter of timber (species specific) can weigh anywhere between 300kg-100kg . Lets take the mean of those two figures at 650kg - This equates to approximately 1.84 cubic meters. Assuming your timber wagon has a capacity of 25 tons a rough guess would be you can expect 46 Cubic meters of timber. Again this is species specific and depends on the variants listed above. Softwood would be much lighter and thus have a reduced result.

If I was you I would save all the hassle and instruct a timber wagon with weighing facilities then do the basic maths to get a ball park cubic meter figure.

Andy – Thanks for your comments! Can of worms!! I do think we should have gone for a more formal tender as to whittle out the red logs from the green.

Its true a firm with 1-3 lads would struggle to meet additional call out needs to those they are committed to in their area/beat. However I would ask all potential contractors to consider current staffing, resources and life styles for suitability. Some folks may want to go for a drink on a Fri/Sat night and rightly so!! I’m sure there are professional companies in the UK who can meet the requirements of this contract.

To those who wish to know the financial returns – again I say we can’t predict future un-predictable tree failure across the UK. As the immortal Del Boy once said “he who dares wins”, so have a go folks!

1. 24 hour 7 days a week contract

2. Max 2 hour’s response time to call out location (unless geographical restraints warrant additional time)

3. Authorisation of up to £200.00 for initial callout (pre-authorised)- Additional man hours require verbal authorisation on your fixed price and estimated man hours to undertake the task in question.

4. Photographs of pre/post works are required for all jobs and email on submitting invoice.

5. Only contractors that provide full company insurance documents and NTPC qualified staff will be considered for these works.

6. Successful contractors must have a 24hr phone number which we can contact you on.

7. Provide a list of resources your company has or can utilise for this contract.

Please note you will not receive £200 regardless of the call out distance. I.E - if the job is 30mins from your base and the job takes 1hr you will receive 2 hours at your submitted rates (1hr travel-1hr works).

Furthermore, your pricing schedule should be for a daytime hourly call-out rate and night time call-out rate.

Daytime = 07:00am - 17:00pm

Nightime = 17:00pm - 07:00am

We will review submitted contractor prices for each area and award works to 1-possibly 2 or more contractors depending on geographical limitations.

Specific nitty-gritty contractual details will be put to the successful area contractors.

I can assure you we don’t need to know your price structure. We undertake LA works and rarely bother with small domestic works.

As of yet we are unsure as to the amount of work the contract will yield. As Im sure you can imagine predicting the % of calls outs is a bit of an art and I’m sure some bright spark would have made lots of wedge if he/she could.

But saying that my second cousins auntie twice removed works at the met office!!

These areas are well within reach of a strategically placed contractor. I have worked from many parts of the UK and been able to reach most areas within the zones within a 2 hour period. Our policy is to reach all call outs by 2 hours of taking the call! However we will review locations/works and will manage operations from out end!

True, a mog set up is a good tool! But when they go wrong they cost a fortune to fix and you get very little chip in the rear box!

Worked for a few lads up north on the tools who used them on the West Coast Main Line! Bit weird driving on the left of a truck but well built!

We are doing all the tree pits, formative pruning etc etc! True a 130" landy and bowser is not as cool as a mog but it serves purpose better and fits the question of overkill! The Landy is out 7 days a week as she is the call out truck, so she pays for her keep!

We hold the watering contract for your neck of the woods simon!

From my understanding this was undertaken on edge trees to promote a more windfirm edge, reduced sail area etc.

Arcview is way to expensive for any private firm! I agree it is a very user friendly system which i have used for the FC.

In the real world we use Mapmaker which allows 3d fly over of a landscape/forest etc. Its a great converting tool also. We often convert client dwg drawings into dxf for gps units and woodland mgt plans. Cost = £250 or so!

For Auto CAD specific drawings we use Turbo CAD a cheaper alternative to the £1500 Auto CAD. Think it costs around £90.00!

These two options will let you deal whith any current GIS/dxf/dwg/tff format drawings.
