  1. Hi all like a few people I know I often visit this website without logging in just for a cheeky browse about and to see whats going on.But since going self employed I started using the site more and more and started contacting people through the site. This has led me to working with and meeting some top blokes as well as top arborists. So as an arbtalk convert I would like to put my details out there......so here goes.

My name is Steven and I have been climbing for 8 years before that I was a groundie for 4. I keep busy locally but as most contractors get days free to work with other people, of which I'm a strong believer of. I think travelling a bit to work with other companies makes me a better arborist (always more to learn). I currently hold cs30, 31, 32, 38, 39, 41 and woodchipper. I also have first aid at work full driving license and dip/arb.

I'm based in Cumbria but happy to travel if the contract warrents it so if anyone needs an experienced climber or groundie please get in touch either by pm on here or by email at [email protected]. My other contact details as well as some more info can be found at ACS Tree Care - Home.

Thanks for taking the time to read and hope to hear from you soon:thumbup:

    Steve

  2. So we finally get to a tree for a second time in thread! original photos in post 10 of this thread, tree actually reduced 11th July 2008, but posted in this thread 2009. Cant believe its been going that long now!

so first up the original post images before and after, and then todays job on the same tree, so just over 4 years to the repeat prune.

Last time foliage % was discussed by some, having had a good look this time while on site I reckon 60-70% of the foliage is removed this time, slightly more than last time as ive dropped a few crotches to thin out the heavy wood rather than just regrowth this time.

    tree in Very good health:biggrin:

That looks nice? Did the tree have a problem to warrant such a heavy reduction?

  3. About the 30-40% reductions you and ness seem to be in discussion about, in my opinion no attack on anyone blah blah blah. It is basic chemical biology(well as basic as chemical biology can get) that removal of huge amount of foliage from a tree at any one time is bad news and yes trees have an amazing ability to recover and live on but Surely large pruning cuts and loss of foliage is not a good thing for the tree and most likely swerves more to what the customer wants then whats best for the tree. This debate however is very healthy Arb is young and its important to push for the correct answers in what seems to be a grey area for many. But to be seen as the profession we all want arb to be seen as we need to be more consistant with what we tell our customers I also realise we are all in a business and need to earn money, but i will stick to my morals and what I believe is right. Like ness says only time will tell..............when all Tonys trees die...Joke!

  4. Hi Skyhuck

Dont get me wrong think the site is great for info especially the fungi stuff, but think sometimes people are favoured and backed up by arbtalk buddies if someone dare have a seperate opinion. Think sometimes a bit of my black cats a panther and lets all feed an ego is funny at times though.

  5. Hello

I dont post often on this site because I feel the freedom of debate on a forum has been lost. But I have to say something about this thread. I have been following since the start and I think its great that pictures are posted of reductions. However I do feel that some are heavy and in the long term will not benefit the tree. That is my view and I asume the knowledge you have is the same as others who bother to read and learn about trees. I may be wrong and I believe others can be. Arb is young and we are all still learning . I hope you are open minded and willing to learn just as you aim to teach us young uns. It will be interesting to see pictures of these trees in say 50-60 years but I doubt that will happen.:001_smile:

    Cheers

    cheers

  6. HA HA Kids are stupid.....we should cut down all the trees so we can have loads of bonfires thats a real reason !!!

Seriousley i dont agree with his reasons but i am not worried that he is going to start some mad tree killing revolution! Its pretty funny though especially the bit about the cats.

  7. I have a background in rock climbing and My grade is/was very high indeed. It has informed my tree climbing and so i would say I am very competant.

What grade exactley what sort of climbing Sport, Trad... Bouldering? What crags you visit? I am a very keen rock climber and it is totally different to tree climbing tree climbing you climb your rope alot and sit in your harness climbing, well, sitting in your harness is what your trying not to do! I suppose it would improve stamina up a tree but not technique.....but then again what do i know??????? Just interested because if i can proof rock climbing helps my work i might get earlier finishes:icon14:......for the benefit of the job like.:vroam:

  8. Unlucky mate you do get some tools doing this job feel for you mate losing money and in the pissing rain, its always a shame when the general public do no take you proffesional advice surely thats why they ring you...:bongsmi: She obviousley wanted you to butcher the tree so in my opinion you did right walking away she probably would have never been happy until the tree was a 8ft stump!!!!!!:heeeelllllooooo:

  9. I make sure nothing can go wrong its called planning work site organisation. I have never in all my time in the trade hurt no one or nothing not because of luck but because i make sure i plan my work.

I know what my insurance covers i did have to go through it before i got the policy and since im clearly getting a excellent deal im not going to tell other people thats the competition. Like it or not we are all competing for the same work.

You talk crap i can not believe you get TPO work without the tickets wind your neck in no one is saying you cant do your job as you say with your experiance you obviousley can. Accidents have nothing to do with planning thats why they are called accidents people are just trying to offer you some advice in case one day super awesome tree surgeon has an injured person on there site and oops aresole insurance company wont pay! Chill out!! I hate crap like this if we are competition and you dont want to offer good advice why do you even post?..........not having a go like!!!!!!!:fisheye:

  10. It does make me chuckle when some guys state that its the uqualified tree workers that do the bad work. I know the level of quality in my work has always been above most of the big companies where quantity not quality matters.

As long as your insured thats all that matters and it would not be insurance if it did not fully cover you just make sure any and all aspects of tree work are covered.

I do appreciate your post pecon as when i do my tickets i will to get pissed off by people with out them but we all start at the bottom and half the reason i personally have stalled is because they are not required it does make you think twice.

Skill is in the individual.

What insurance company mate when i got insured had to send proof of nptc not digging but if your insurance offer cover that easy i want a piece of that!!! No tickets insurance void they told me!!!

  11. I am new to this forum and have just stumbled on to this thread. I find this forum very informative and as people have said its pretty easy to spot the bull crap if you are in the trade. I have just recently gone self employed and most of the threads about starting up have been really good but if people have lied about how good they are doing so what if i based how i work just from stuff i read from a forum i would be pretty stupid. If people feel the need to big themselves up let them they know the truth.............................................as do we!!!
