Thank you all. I was leaning towards the x canadiensis but have been contested on this by colleagues. I'm lucky though, since it's for a public document, we're only using a common name, so hybrid black poplar will do for me!

I thought it was interesting to see the ways in which people who ascended on the casualty's line chose to lift the casualty's weight off the mechanical ascenders. The ones who chose to use his/her own weight seemed to do best!

I'm a little late, but try this one.
Remember that the hazard rating in this method was only intended to be used when you are managing a population of trees.

Hi all
I have just relocated to Ely, and am now looking for subbie work.
I have ten years climbing experience, I am confident doing any type of tree work, and there are plenty of pics on this forum of work i'v done. References available.
I have tickets, climbing/rigging kit, saws and transport.
I also have an 18 tonne truck, with a 9.5 t/metre crane with log grapple. The truck is slightly bigger than a 7.5 tonne cargo, but will carry ten tonnes of timber.
This is available to hire as a package with me as climber, or on its own just to collect timber.
As I have just moved in, i have no internet access, so you can contact me on 07875 386674.
Thanks
Peter
Is the dog available as part of the package? That's all I want to know... ! Oh, and good luck!

Needless to say I will buy a copy. Thanks fellas. (I'm not sexist. Linda, is fella offensive to lasses and that? I am quite old fashioned and from Northumberland.) PM me if I am being thick.
You're okay Mark. Funny that you said "lasses and that"... what are "and that"??!!

I agree with all the posts above. There's a dvd to go with it but it's just so American it's ridiculous, don't spend money on it... or do, if you want to laugh at/with Rip and Tom...!!
We're looking to hold a rigging workshop/jamboree later this year that will go through the theory as well as the practicalities of simple to advanced techniques of rigging. Keep your eyes open for more info...

The Swedish comp will be held in Malmö 22-24th of May. Anyone going?

"Cowboys" are highly skilled workers tending cattle on ranches, and should not be confused with the unprofessional numpties that you're referring to...!! ;-D

I'll go for the oldest washed up hasbeen award!

I am slowly developing an interest, I photographed this yesterday while walking around Bedgebury Pinetum with the curator. He did tell what it is but I cant remember it,s name.
Looks like Phaeolus schweinitzii to me

I've done some Picusing and Resistographing on trees with Inonotus dryadeus, pretty interesting, I'll have a look to see if I can find photos and readings.
-
I'd go with Phellinus until proven differently...

This is what a dessicated Inonotus dryadeus usually looks like.
The tree this fungi is on is massive, road side and covered in fruiting bodies.
The white I.dryadeus is on a short old pollarded oak just outside Shaftesbury. Its roadside but I wouldn't be concerned about it as the road is very rural and quiet.
At Longleat they have loads of Oaks with I.dryadeus but I have not seen one that has failed. Im sure one has but I have not had the chance to view the decay.
I.dryadeus does not move via root grafts and colonises hosts with airborne spores. I think the reason the Longleat estate has so many trees with I.dryadeus on is due to mowing around the trees and causing mechanical damage to the buttresses allowing the fungi to colonise the trees.
You must have posted at the same time as me!!!

i seem to spend my life debating this stuff with the inforcers etal and it confuses the hell out of me which is why i try t getto the bottom of it so i can help people understand what duties are being put on them, but the english legal system is very complex and it is that that will test all of this in the end. when push comes to shove do your best if in doubt ask

But one's best might not always be enough...! (Or is that a typically female way of thinking?!) I know what needs to be done, just thinking of other people out there who might not..

Thanks guys, it's been most educational. I suppose I'll just have to see when I get there... It's funny though, isn't it, such a crowded flat country and reception is a problem!

Never had any problems in any part of Norfolk with Orange - well 'cept Blakeney. But nothing works in Blakeney...
But did you ever check to see if you had a signal indoors in Corpusty?

ask ur neighbours see what they workin for them
Duh... ;-D
I'm not one of those who post on arbtalk just because I can't be bothered to find out myself... I don't have neighbours yet.

This is one for you guys out in the middle of nowhere: Which mobile phone company to go for? Especially if you want to do make phone calls and browse the internet? I've asked a few companies, and obviously they all claim to have the most splendid coverage, but I know for a fact that O2 can be rubbish, and Vodafone customers have problems with reception while indoors...!! So, what's your verdict? Any tips on good tariffs would be much appreciated as well! Ta

these leafletts would support ACOPS in there status it you dont have to do them if you can proove you are doing it a better way a simple example of this may be a thing such as the 12492 helmet, if vyou use one with greater protectiob thats fine but not lesser
does that help
Yes, thanks. It just gets a bit confusing sometimes with "shall", "must" and all that malakey... "Must" to me means "this and nothing else" sort of. The leaflet doesn't actually say that you can do differently (above and beyond as it were), except for in the section on Type A chainsaw trousers. But perhaps I'm the only one to get confused?

Michael Jordans' Encyclopedia of Fungi of B & E, makes mention of F. fomentarius "on wood of Broad-leaf trees, predominantly in northern regions where it favours Birch but also Beech and Sycamore"................
Okay, thanks!
Tree Officer, North Somerset Council
in Employment
Posted
We are currently recruiting for a permanent tree officer to join myself and one other tree officer here in beautiful North Somerset. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who has perhaps been on the tools for a while, has a level 3 qualification (AA Tech cert or equivalent) with knwoledge and experience of tree risk assessment and tree law. Here at North Somerset, each tree officer deals both with managing council owned trees and planning issues relating to privately owned trees, which makes the job varied and very interesting.
I've attached the job advert which has got contact and website details. Closing date is 24 July, and the interview date is likely to be mid-August. If you will be on holiday mid-August, please mention this in your application, so that we can accomodate you, should you be short-listed for the interview.
You can contact me for an informal discussion about the job. My contact details are in the job advert. You can find several useful documents on our website, relating to our tree team responsibilities.
Cheers
Linda Saretok
